When I was working at the Buy More we used the word "pineapple" to let the employees know something bad was happening and to evacuate the store.

I never knew Walmart had this sort of thing. I will admit I never worked in retail though.

If you want everyone to leave the store, why the f*ck do you have a code name for it that only employees will recognize?

Just tell everyone to get the f*ck out.

This doesn't make sense.

And does a hostage situation at Walmart happen often enough to require its own code?

They don't want everyone to leave the store.  They want customers and the gunman to stay, and to use the self-checkout.

I do a "Code Brown" pretty much every moring and Mrs. Carte justs sits around and sips her coffee, without a care in the world.

To be fair, a Walmart code brown will lead to a regular code brown

We went through this with the Code ADAM crap.

"Well we don't want to tip off the abductor."

"You don't think blocking the exits and confronting everyone with a child won't tip off the abductor?"

"We need TEAM players here"

To date, WalMart is still the only store outside of a pawn shop where I have seen someone open carry a firearm.

Just saying a mass shooting in a WalMart probably would end badly for the shooter before the cops got there

Maybe the code brown is because there is about to be a firefight? Queue willemdafoe.gif

What about when the evil dead rise up and torment customers? Would that still be a code Brown?

All retail stores have these. Not just for emergencies, for all kinds of things. Still remember 1506 (damaged product being returned) and 61 (probable shoplifter) from walgreens. Also, I think everyone knows IC3 by now.

No, I did not.

Active shooter. Okay. So, like, wouldn't I heart gunshots and already be on my way out before anyone starts announcing "code brown"?

2023-02-05 9:51:40 AM
Er, "hear" gunshots. Hear them. Not "heart" them.

If they told everyone it was an active shooter, half of them would run for the exits, half would pull out weapons and try to hunt the guy down, shooting at anyone with a weapon, and some of them would steal things on the way out in the panic.

2023-02-05 10:42:35 AM
So if I were the Active shooter and hear "Code Brown", I should head for the exits for a better, more target-rich, environment?

This is Walmart. We heart gunshots.

I found a couple of ~50 year old CODE BROWN door signs in a hospital we're renovating. I'm going to procure them. Somehow.

Code Brown is for an active shooter situation. In any case, the announcement will ask all customers to evacuate the store immediately in order to ensure their safety.

The whole article is basically meaningless fluff. And it's likely not even accurate as sources I trust more contradict it (brown is a code for general violence, many times more likely to be a fist fight than an active shooter)

It's not news, it's....meh

They don't want a panic and everyone to trample everyone.

in college, we would get on the intercom and say "code 10, aisle x"  and it was just to let the guys know there was a hot lady in the vicinity.

I would have thought that code brown meant the UPS guy was onsite.

In the event of a Code Brown, you have choices of exits...

Return to the main entrance, you get seen on your way through, and you get shot.

Take the nearest (emergency) exit, an alarm sounds, you draw attention to yourself, and you get shot.
