The backlash over the very nature of supply and demand lately is a very weird phenomenon.

The ticket prices are that high because PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO PAY THEM.  Because he's beyond amazing live.

And even with those ridiculous prices, I still wasn't able to get a ticket they sold out so fast.  Which I'm still annoyed over.

I'm getting flayed for this, but he disappeared up his own ass a while ago. A one man Broadway show based on your life? I mean, he was coated in teflon for that. Anyone else would have gotten a bunch of reasonably good natured (and not so good natured, let's be honest) shiat over that, but not Bruuuce. Can you imagine if say, Sting, tried that shiat? We'd have a thousand memes.

They ought to auction all the tickets and stay in town until they're playing to a bunch of dollar seats.

Yeah no one's ever done an autobiographical one man show on Broadway before. Bruce deftly poked all the holes at himself in the show, what were the reviewers going to be left to do?

As for Sting, read up on The Last Ship

Arbitrage exists because the tickets are too cheap.  He needs to charge more.

It sucks, but I don't make the rules of microeconomics.

A) Your strike-through makes that sentence literally gibberish.

B) I don't know what the hell definition of arbitrage you pulled out of your butt, but whatever it is, it does not apply to tickets.

Arbitrage is about taking advantage of and gaming multiple markets with differing odds in gambling to, essentially, make it impossible to lose.  It has zero application here.

I'm GUESSING you just mean resellers?  People who buy tickets and sell them for a profit?  The whole point of the on-demand pricing is so people can't do that.  When people buy $100 tickets and flip them for $2000 on the resell market, that means the tickets are way too cheap.  Bruce purposefully said he agreed with pricing them that way so that HE/estreet gets the money and not some dumbass reseller.

/Yeah, you can ban reselling (which I would approve of) but that just makes it even more impossible to get tickets if you keep price low.  This is why supply and demand is a thing.  And since they sold out in like 10 minutes even going for hundreds and thousands of dollars, I'd argue they were still too cheap.

You would think there would be an altogether more economical future-of-rock and-roll-past out there to run up the flagpole and maintain a 40 plus year written exegesis on.

Just wait til he's long dead and in the public domain, your great-grandkids can meet down by that Exxon sign that gives their fair city light and wonder what the hell they should be feeling in relation to that particular anachronism.

Would it be considered ironic that an artist who presented himself as the voice of the "common man" has priced his tickets to his shows so high that the common man can't afford to go?

I suppose. But it isn't Springsteen screwing the average fan. It's people with deep pockets who are willing to pay exorbitant prices for tickets that price the average fan out of the market. The only difference now is that the face value of the ticket reflects the actual market value and instead of the scalpers pocketing the money, Springsteen does.

...and maybe Jon Landau going blind in one eye is some half-assed backwards St. Paul on the road to Damascus thing. I mean, if you're looking for divine meaning in popular music figures' human frailty, that fits. It's not fair, but it feels Biblical, like critics wanted these people to be.

The music is not enough, apparently. Somebody gets a tenured professorship in Springsteen scholarship 30 years from now-hell, I bloviated for college credit at SFSU in a Bob Dylan lecture  course 13 years ago.

Shiat, I am bloviating now. Ain't even getting paid.

I think the common man got over Springsteen about, oh, Darkness of the Edge of Town? The River? Nebraska? Somewhere around there. Not in a bitter way, just "hope he's having a good life, but I don't want to feel four hours of sweating rock-n-roll intensity & deal with traffic after the show. I don't want to relive 1978-1982, it actually kinda sucked, on all levels."

It happens. It's nobody's fault.

Common man found a new shuffle. Got born again. Took up fly fishing, whatever. Started listening to old bluegrass.

Though I will say if these geezers are going to participate in and encourage quality high-falutin'self-mythologization before they good and dead, they might as well cash in.

Nobody's gonna be breaking their hands off like Victor Jara. Not if they can help it.

Banning resale isn't all that hard. The person who bought the tickets must be present with their group. This means you can't gift them to a friend or whatever, but it's worth it.

My wife is a musician and most of her friends are as well. Musicians, even moderately successful ones, don't make as much money as people think they do. Shows like this make a lot of money but that is split in so many ways that the artists don't take home very much. Springsteen is popular enough that his contract probably lets him take home more than most, but I would wager that Ticketmaster is probably making more than Springsteen himself off of this tour.

The essence of FARK is every character in that comic strip. Bruce is a great show. My brother and I took my mom to see him in Milwaukee. Weirdly enough, it was one of the loudest concerts I've ever been to.

I'm sure the content was fine. It's the concept I have an issue with. You want to do a solo acoustic tour? Cool. You want to pimp your book? Do a book tour. You want to camp out on farking Broadway and charge Broadway prices? fark you and your little dog too.
