Half the stuff in the Louvre has been stolen from other countries. So, they are charging him for stealing stolen stuff?

Antiquities trafficking [...] Louvre Director

Isn't that basically the job description?

I would imagine that "complicity" is a non-negotiatble requirement for the director of any major museum. Say what you want about China but at least they seem to acknowledge that they legally sold off their shiat and are legally attempting to buy them back.

Did this guy not know what field he was getting into?

Well, of course he is guilty so I guess you can take that into account if you are not a Republican. And they take judges seriousoly in France because they are like that and because they don't elect the foo"s. Like French waiters, French judges think they are professionals and act accordingly and take artisanal pride in their work sometimes if they are any good.

They aren't nice, but why would they have to be? They are paid and trained to do things right and that is part of the package.

If you find a good waiter, stay with them, go with them to their new restaurant, follow their career curve.

The French have a saying for that.
