riding a lift in cold weather is torture.
This is backcountry weather.
Or indoors, fireside weather.

Ski wear is fine when the temperature is in the 20s. It's not made for -20.

Subby, precipitation =/= temperature.

Not sure anyone wants to ski in sub-zero temperatures.

One of the local slopes was running ads yesterday about how it's never too cold to ski, guessing they weren't thrilled those were still airing.

Way back when we considered buying the Cordova Times in Valdez/Cordova, Alaska.  They had put in a skilift a few years before and had so much snow that they had to raise the lift lines.  That's when my wife buried the idea.

You want to get caught on a lift when its this cold, because they have to stop it for wind?

I've got good gear, i don't mind it being a bit cold. I've been out on days where its miserable.

I was planning on going up to killington this weekend and noped the f out, because my kid was going to be with me and "go get sloshed at wobbly" was off the table.

You only get the crazys out on days like this, and there aren't enough to justify the cost of running the joint.

At least places are able to blow, although i heard our local was having issues with the cold and stuff icing up.

Its been a weird season. We have done more indoor skiing this winter than days on the mountain.

You realize that isn't air temp, right, let alone wind chill.

Good for you. I run universal wax all season except for 45°F / 8°C spring slush days. If you care about temperature matching your ski wax down to that temperature you're either an FIS world cup skier/ski technician or some dweeb that thinks it matters that much.

I bagged out this weekend, -50°F wind chill is not fit for man nor beast nor lift attendant, and I have no problem skiing into -5°F weather.

I tried skiing once, my brother in law talked me into buying thermal underwear... turnout out to be 50 degrees on the mountain that day, by noon my coat was unbuttoned and my gloves were off.  Skiing is a lot of work if you're not good at it.

/Had marginally better luck at snowboarding.
//Boots are much more comfortable.

If I'm skiing classic I'll stop mid trail and rewax my grip section.
If I'm skate skiing then I wax every 10km, unless it's old snow then I wax every 5km

Probably should have specified that at the beginning. Huge difference moving along in the woods largely protected from wind at 5-20 mph under your own power vs being blasted by 40 mph winds sitting on a lift.

...I'm sure plenty of them could handle the temperature, it's just that most people usually prefer to enjoy their hobbies.

This might come as a shock to you, but most American hikers also prefer to walk along a trail rather than grab a machete and cut our way through a jungle when it's raining cats and dogs.  And you'll never believe our take on fishing, we basically view it as an excuse to drink beer on a boat and are more than happy to go to a restaurant afterwards and purchase already cooked seafood to eat.

We're such pansies...

When I was a kid I'd drive all over New York to different ski areas (none of the ones close to NYC). I recall one time at Gore Mt. it was cold enough that they had someone at the top of the mountain checking you are you got off the chairlift to see if you could ski or go into the warming hut. I think the coldest skiing was night skiing when some of the places really should not have been open but being young it didn't seem to matter.

With all of the technology they're using these days, I wouldn't be surprised if it failed in cold weather.

I went skiing with my brother and nephews for a couple of days between Christmas and New Years.

Yes, I know that's one of the busy periods (along with MLK weekend and President's day weekend)... but to start things off, the kiosks to get passes were broken, so everyone who had bought tickets online had to get in line with everyone else... so that was more than an hour, because they ask you for the names of every person.

One of the lifts had a conveyor belt so you don't have to run out in front of the chair like the old days... but the gates to let you know when you go weren't working... so people would follow the chair immediately, get too far out in front, and the conveyor would push them off the edge before the chair came up behind them.  So they had to keep stopping the lift, which then meant people fall getting off when it starts back up, so it was just a slog.

Another lift had the conveyor belt not working at all, so I think they were running the lift a little slower than normal.

It wasn't all that cold, so I don't know if maybe water had melted and then froze overnight and screwed things up or what.  You'd think they'd design for that sort of thing, though.

Back in the early 90s I was at a ski resort that had to close down early that night because they were getting too much snow. My friends and I had some of the last runs of the day and it was some of the best skiing of my life.

Skied Jay (northern VT) on a cold day once. Not as cold as this but still cold. One run and straight into the lodge for hot cocoa. I think I might have gotten three or maybe five runs in on the day. Too frickin' cold.

Now I'm genuinely curious as to how often he polishes his machete, and what sort of polish he uses, when he feels like a leisurely stroll through the Amazon rainforest as he derides those pansies over there on the beaten path who insisted on getting Malaria shots and hiring a tour guide.

Alas we'll never know the joy of killing a jaguar with a machete then crapping ourselves to death behind some bushes, because we're to soft to make proper use of our leisure time like Sumo Jeb.

It can be.

There are plenty of exhilarating recreation activities that can almost kill you that appeals to the adrenaline junkies.  Skiing, sky diving, bungee jumps, etc.

Of those, skiing is the only one that might have practical uses unless you're in the military.  But trying to survive during nuclear winter is probably going to require Nordic skis, not alpine.  There are telemark bindings that let you do both, though.
