I get encouraging the culture through language, even to the point of making it part of the formal education, but let's not drop the wee ones on their heads while we're at it.

I was going to chastise you for not capitalizing the letter "i", but in Welsh iat's probably a consonant.

Also: Bargle! Nargle! Zous!

I can see why it's a big deal that Welshman children speak Walsh properly. One slip of the tongue and you're suddenly summoning Cthulhu.

Welsh is a ridiculous language.  No one would ever choose to use a Welsh word for anything significant.

I remember a bit about fines levied in lieu of punishment in merry old England. Kill a serf, it's a few pieces of silver. Kill a Lord, it's a pile of silver. And a Welshman outside of Wales was free. I think I get it.

I spent a couple days in Wales a few years ago and thought the local TV news sounded like they were running the audio backwards.

Welsh is a dying language for good reason. Speaking it isn't that hard, but the translation factor to modern English spellings is absurd. Looking at written Welsh, and using that to pronounce anything so that Welsh people can understand you, is virtually impossible.

And I was amazed at how a lot of Welshmen are still incensed -In-sensed- about William the First, who conquered Wales...in the early 1100s.

But those raven-haired Welsh women: Dayum hawt. And in evidence, I direct your gaze to Catherine Zeta Jones.

Marbles in their mouth? Isn't more like mucus? Welsh sounds like you are constantly clearing your throat, but still trying to have a real conversation.

If language is one of the most significant parts of your culture, you have a shiatty culture.

Culture is art, food, fashion, lifestyle, values. It doesn't matter what language you speak. Nobody became less British by speaking French. Nobody is going to be less Welsh by speaking English.

Welsh is actually by far the healthiest of the extant Celtic languages, the only one not considered endangered. The proportion of the Welsh population able to speak Welsh has been stable for the last fifty years at about 20%.

Irish is in far worse shape, despite a hundred years of government support for Irish. The number of Irish people reporting using Irish daily is maybe four percent if the population, and shrinking even in the Gaeltacht. The last known monolingual speaker of Irish died in 1998.

Except one of the main moves in those that want to extinguish a native culture is to attempt to abolish the local language. The English oppressed the British, Scottish and Irish natives for centuries in attempts to wipe out their cultures. Not sure how healthy Manx and Breton are, Cornish has bugger all speakers these days, Irish seems to be doing OK with having immersive schools where the likes of Dara Ó Brian learned Irish and he tends to use it exclusively when he can. I'd like to know more Scots Gaelic, because it's the language of my cousins if not my forefathers, and learning languages is never a bad thing.

This school was supposed to be a Welsh language immersion school, and it just didn't do what it was supposed to. It deserves a shiatty rating.

I'm Welsh, born and living in Canada. I'm certainly not Canadian. I'm certainly not British. I don't speak a lick of Welsh. I guess I'm just stateless, then?

That's a good question. My (Welsh) father always taught me a lot about fairness and value to our community. Collaboration over competition. This hasn't always served me well where I am now, but as it turns out, these are Welsh values.

The main Welsh value is "hating the English"
