vudukungfu: I used to get shaken awake by them in Vermont

Yup, happened one particular time I can remember growing up in Upstate NY. House shook like crazy, dog howled, and mom screamed, "WHAT'S HAPPENING?!", for about 3 minutes, then said she didn't want me to go to school because nothing like that had ever happened before. It was around 6:30 AM.

They were rollicking here in southern New Hampshire last night.  About every 10 minutes it sounded like something hit the roof and side.  The wind was howling too.  We woke up this morning to -14°F With a -48°F wind-chill.  I heard Mt. Washington set a new bad weather record with a wind-chill of -109°F.

Heard a couple last night when it dipped to -34ºC here (-29F) but they were more like 'thuds' as if someone dropped a very heavy weight on the ground some distance away.  No shaking was felt..  Also my house was making noises - little pops and cracks just barely audible..

\-34ºC is generationally cold here in S.E. Ontario...
\\I'm 71 and have never seen it get close to that.
\\\warming to +3ºC tomorrow.......

Had multiple a couple years back when we got hit with similar frigidity here in Chicago. I've never heard them before so there was a definite WTF until I read up
