So the state has regulations on the instal of gas lines and they trust the provider to make sure your instal is safe and this angers you, for reasons?

Nah more the cert is made up by a guy named Gavin who has full control of it as way to personally make money the whole test is hokey with a huge failure rate.  making many people retest, and spend more money.

A lot of the practice test questions we questioned him on usually got a response like "in my opinion" "or my belief" dude you don't even like dryer boxes, fark outta here.

Like a 20 hour class where you listen to this blithering idiot talk about his life stories and his divorce.

Creepy as fark there was a woman in my group and he said "gentlemen please let her use the bathroom first as courtesy to the young woman" "I'm sorry for singling you out there are a lot of fine females in this field..."

So farking cringe. The class and test is a farking hostage situation.

Unregulated capitalism is unregulated.  Large corporations should have a muzzle, a leash, and a gun pointed at their heads at all times.  The largest ones should be barred from further acquisitions.  And the legalized bribery of elected officials will prevent any re-regulation, short of a revolution, unfortunately.

F*ck British Gas, Thames Water, SSE, BT/Openreach, etc.  I despise them all.

Older English books mention keeping "shillings on hand for the gas meter." I thought it had changed.

Some years ago I lived in an apartment with a prepaid electric meter. The rates were the same, but I always had to keep an eye on it to make sure it didn't conk out on me. In the nearly six years I was in that apartment I dropped the ball a couple of times, even though I tried to be careful, and had to pay a fee to get the electricity reconnected. Total pain in the butt.

Why a reconnect fee? The whole point of a prepaid meter is it just shuts off when you run out of money and turns on when you top it off

TFA claims the rates are higher for the ones they install now, which is pretty farked up given that the people who have them installed are the poor. I suppose the increased fees goes towards the cost of the meter.

But of course, as always, being poor is expensive.

Oh but of course there all always fees.  A meter inspection fee, a billing service fee, a because we happened to drive by your house fee, a fark you because I said so fee.

Because they'd shut off the electricity when you were X amount of time past your prepaid amount of electricity running out.

Yeah, but the meter shuts it off. No one has to come out and disconnect it when that prepaid meter does the disconnect (when the money runs out) for them.

Seems like if it's prepaid, that means no credit check and deposit.  That actually seems like a help for poor to not have to deal with that.

But...  Gotta ask... how does that work?  I would assume it would have a credit card swipe, or a remote portal where you'd add credits to it as needed (think EZPass or SmarTrip cards).

But if this is literally a coin-op gas meter, with some snaggle-toothed briton pulling coins with King Chuck's ugly mug and adding them like a shiatty 80's motel massage bed, that's farking hilarious.

Probably something where you take the meter number to a point of payment (local shops that offer payment terminals) and payment with cash spits out a PIN or other number you key into the electronic meter. You key in the PIN and then you are metered out the number of kWs you paid for.

Sounds like time to install solar and some batteries. How about those new wind devices for homes? It's past time to kick gas to the curb.

Yeah, I remember feeding 2-shilling/10p coins into the electric meter and the rental TV at my grandparents council  house.  I might be getting old.

It's relatively easy to do so, too. Unless you live somewhere with very extreme winters, gas is no longer cheaper than heat pumps at any phase from installation to upkeep to running cost. A massive propaganda campaign telling people that they can't live without gas ranges (this is a real thing) is helping slow the transition. It represents a small fraction of natural gas revenues, but putting in gas for the stove means gas to the boiler, underfloor heating, or fireplace is a given.

By all means, tell this to the electric company.
