There are no good guys. We haven't had the conversation yet about how this culture within the Memphis police festered to the point where five cops felt empowered to lynch an innocent man. That's a systemic problem that starts with the force's leadership. You think if you reach into a bag of jelly beans and pull out five vomit-flavored ones that you just coincidentally happened to grab the only five vomit-flavored ones in the whole bag?

Within the next year we'll have an article about how the union won in court and he has to be hired back and compensated.

It seems like cops are only fired temporarily in the US.

I'm not going to pile on - I've posted obsolete articles before, too - but I can get behind this sentiment. Newsweek is a hell-hole of biased reporting these days, and their content should be definitely verified with someone reputable before it's posted.

The thing that pisses me off is that this wasn't an evolving investigation, where they didn't find out about Hemphill's participation days afterwards - they knew. Worse, they knew that he lied, and still kept him on (and initially out of the clutches of the press.)

The point is the lynching, not the innocence or guilt of the person. Cops are not judge, jury, and executioner. I don't care if the guy was a murder suspect. They beat a man to death while not worrying about any consequences. That is the problem.

5 cops beat that kid to death after he ran from an initial dog pile

This guy was a late arriver to the initial dog pile (not one of the five) and the only one of the original instigators who was white and the only one who was fired.  I think that's right?

He deserved to be fired, for the lying, for sure, but I'm not sure this proves anything about the system, I'm not sure it doesn't, either - other than cops do lie for each other

A sane, professional police force that protects the public from harm, helps victims find justice and puts the bad guys away is one of those elements of modern civilization we 'muricans just aren't allowed to have, like health care and education.

There's a lot to unpack in that photo. The pubestache that every 13 year old tries, unsuccessfully, to grow. The attempt at a thousand yard stare that just comes across as looking inebriated. The double chin where the secondary chin is far more pronounced than his actual chin. The "my mom cuts my hair" haircut. The mouth that screams "I was made for being a prison biatch".

If we dug deep, I would wager that we would find he has been a loser his entire life. That he was picked on and mocked as a child. That he became a cop for the power and "authoriteh".

Hemphill Tased the guy before the beating. There were two "confrontations." During the first "confrontation," Hemphill fired a stun gun at Nichols as he fled. He caught up with the other cops who were beating Nichols to death in the second "confrontation." The body camera footage released that showed the beating was Hemphill's.

The five officers identified during the beating were all fired. Hemphill was placed on leave, and wasn't mentioned at all initially even though it was his body camera footage that was released.

Correlations with race existing aren't inherently racist. It could be evidence of racism, but it also could be a million other things.

The first five people charged were all black. And the press release at the time alluded to additional charges they might come:

In addition to the five officers charged Thursday, Davis said in the statement that other officers also are under investigation.

Two Memphis Fire Department personnel also have been relieved of duty pending an investigation.

Is it possible that the delay is 100% racism. But assuming that it is could reasonably called race-baiting.

The Memphis Police Department announced last week it had concluded its administrative investigation into Nichols' death

It's also worth nothing that the MPD is prominently black and the highest ranking member of the administration is also Black. That certainly doesn't preclude racism as a motivating factor, but it seems to reduce the likelihood somewhat.

Feh - I could be wrong about the body camera footage. Hemphill's lawyer indicated that the white cop seen in the body camera footage was Hemphill, but that may have been from the first "confrontation," not the second.

Hemphill was a participant - the fact that he didn't personally beat Tyre Nichols to death doesn't somehow absolve him of his participation, and he's being fired for a bit more than just lying about it.

And on top of that, what he did wasn't as obvious.  It's kind of important to do a pretty thorough investigation into things like this and make sure everything is 100% by the book.  If they fark it up, he gets his job back.  But people cant help stoking their racial bullshiat agenda.
