My ex-wife's grandfather was a Boeing engineer and he would collect parts from tests and make some great wall art in the 1950's. I imagine you could do the same with discarded guns.

BUT NOT IF THEY ARE WORKING!

It's trivial to pull a firing pin or plug-weld a barrel to render a rifle inoperable. From the article, it sounds like ATF wanted each one cut in three places, which might have been too much for a small shop to do.

I don't know what qualifies as a 'small shop' in this context, but if you're able to just throw away a couple hundred items like it's no big deal, it doesn't seem that small to me.

And possibly a few hundred, as they said witnesses had seen them doing this before, too.

Yeah, isn't that weird? It would've been nice if the article had at least attempted to address that.

It's also trvial in most modern guns to replace a firing pin, I think I'll agree with the ATF on this.

FTFA: According to court filings first reported by CourtWatch, on January 19, 2023, an Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, sanitation worker stumbled upon a dumpster with 236 rifles and 12 shotguns in it.

You have to be pretty messed up to "stumble upon" a dumpster, especially if you're a garbage man. Most those guys know where the dumpsters are.

I'm betting the local mob/gang boss paid the shop owner a good chunk of change to "throw out" those guns.

As is only right.

The Second Amendment says that you have a right to bear arms. Not a privilege, a RIGHT. But if you can't afford to buy a gun then your right has been infringed upon. Therefore all guns should be provided free of charge.

Bullets, too.

That is a huge amount of firearms, shiat even just as scrap metal.

There is much more going on here than is mentioned in the article.  Money laundering at the least, probably organised crime.

That makes more sense, but I thought that shotguns don't have the issues with being able to connect them to a crime, as they don't leave rifling on the bullets.

(I guess maybe the imprint that the firing pin left on the casing?  But that doesn't seem like it would be forensically admissible unless you had swapped it out for something uniquely shaped)

And your comment made me realize something else-- that's a mixed lot.  Did the manufacturer just magically screw up both the rifles and the shotguns in the same way?

There's definately something fishy going on here.  Hell, just the fact that the kid gave away a magazine to go with the rifles is a big deal.  Those might've sold for $20 or so depending on what it's from.

Is this some insurance scam?  Failed ghost gun manufacturing?  The worst money laundering imaginable?

That's disgusting. This is America and we can do better. Surely there is a charitable organization the guns could have been given to for refurbishment and distribution to the gunless and differently witted. Maybe give them to a school for use as training weapons?  Such a waste when so many are forced to go through life un-gunned.

Yes. Bear arms. Plural. So clearly the man needed at least two weapons, and he was provided with what he is due as a red blooded American. Nothing to see here.

The chances that any retailer would throw away hundreds of items worth 10s of $1,000s because he legitimately received defective merch is precisely 0.00%.

I'm looking forward to the follow-up article after the ATF figures out what actually happened.

Steel sucks for scrap metal. Steel mixed with plastic? Sure right thing to do would scrap it. But rarely worth the gas to take a large amount of Steel in.

Most mechanical contractors just dumpster it.

Really frigging funny watching tweakers pull galvanized duct out of the dumpster to Try and get money for their fix.

I'm not a gun store owner, but if I was and I recieved defective guns, I would be contacting the distributor for replacements. I wouldn't get $200,000 in guns, and say "all of these are bad, I'm just gonna yeet them into the dumpster."

That's right. Just think of how exceptional America would be then. Do we guarantee healthcare to everyone? No! Healthcare is only for those who can afford to pay for it. But everyone gets guns.

CSB:  many, many years ago, I saw an ad in Shotgun News for "demilled" rifles, mostly Mauser variants and Enfields, for $100 each.  Had my local dealer order me 5.

I get the rifles, and sure enough, you can't close the bolt on any of them.  I take a close look, and saw a small piece of metal had been wedged inside each receiver.  Got a small pair of pliers and pulled the pieces out.  All bolts now closed.

Receivers were okay, barrels had plenty of life left in them, stocks needed cleaning up, but they were all functional rifles.

Called my dealer to get more, but they had sold out.  I made a nice profit on those rifles.  Wondered if any of the gun shops in the nearest big city were curious as to why folks were suddenly looking for 8mm and .303 ammo.

/CSB

/SMLE No. 4 Mk 1 is one of my favorite rifles, but haven't been able to shoot bolt-actions for many years because of blown disks and hardware in my neck.  20 rounds and I would be in pain for days.

I worked at several steel mills during my career. Whenever police wanted to dispose of confiscated guns, they were taken to the mill and charged into the electric furnace to melt down. All properly witnessed and verified.

Did he "throw away a crap-ton of guns" or did the guns not have what it takes to compete in a fast-paced atmosphere?

Have you seen the store down the road? They have m60s that all come loaded with cop killer bullets. Every federal agent you shoot gets you a free box of grenades. You think those guns can compete with that?
