Good for him.

My mother was a government aviation worker who knew a guy that worked at the lost luggage desk for an airline. She would tell this next story often.

The airline guy hearing complaints was trying to help a very upset customer whose bag was missing. Understandably upset, but the customer was just a rude asshole, repeatedly throwing nasty personal insults. The airline guy swallowed all the heat, and remained professional.

Later, when the bag turned up, he stowed it on a plane to Alaska.

Check flights on Ethiopian Airlines. They sound pretty cool if I ever need to go to Addis Ababa.

A spokesperson for Lufthansa told CNN that they were forwarding O'Dwyer's experience to customer service, and promised to "work through the matter" and contact him directly.
They added: "We regret that we could not fully meet our own quality standards here."

I mean, just send a dude to get his bags already. They can use his Airtag GPS to assist. How farking hard is it?

There's a finite window for the airline to find your luggage.

Unless things have changed in the past couple of years, they recycle the tracking numbers, so after your luggage has been missing a few weeks, they assign that number to someone else's luggage and you're SOL.

There was some photographer who said he traveled with a starter pistol... because firearms get secured so no baggage handler can go through your case, and better tracking of it.

Don't know why it's Lufthansa's fault when the bloody suitcase was lost in the logistical nightmare that is London Heathrow. Blame Lufthansa if it happens at a German terminal where they might at least have some sort of influence on the process.

Wife had nearly the exact same experience last summer with Delta/KLM.  Stuck in Europe for over two weeks without bags.  Could tell the airlines exactly where they were with AirTag.

Call your congressman!  Until there is a financial penalty for this crappy service it will continue. I think if bags are not found within 3 days the airline should have to provide for replacement clothes/etc. for you to wear at your destination.  After 5 days they should be responsible for the full value of the contents, up to $5,000.

The US really needs an airline passenger bill of rights.

That happened with a bag my mom checked on a direct flight I booked for her last summer. Got the runaround from the airline about the status as they were obviously trying to bait me into just holding onto the hopes they would find and return it.

After a week, I filled out the itemized cost of the lost baggage which was several times higher than the cost of the ticket. Amazingly, the luggage showed up right about the time they were forced to pay the outrageous fee.

Also filled out the replacement costs of all the stuff she had to purchase immediately which they ended up paying. Unfortunately, we were being truthful and it wasn't that much. Definitely not worth the hassle or headache.

Domestically in the USA, no.

You have to declare a firearm and it has to be in a locked hard side case. The case can be a locked pistol case tossed inside any unsecured bag, or it can be a hard side suitcase with locks. The locks don't really have to be secure, though. The law technically states it must be locked to where only the passenger has keys, but the TSA allows those locks with master keys so no one cares.

If you put a gun in any zippered baggage, the zipper can be opened with a Bic pen.

Banning "finding your own luggage"? Or just if it's in the "twilight zone"?
If a Bluetooth signal from an AirTag can take down a plane, then WTF with the paid WiFi and paid cell calls.
Just as absurd as it was in "West Wing" in 1999.

You're right in that it wasn't professional. However, if enough people have abused someone in a situation like that, where they know the only reason they won't get their teeth knocked out is the person probably needs to keep that crappy job, when that person gets a chance to retaliate against some f__kface they will take it.

When someone acts like an asshole they're disregarding human nature as a whole.

While the airlines losing luggage is still inexcusable, none of the above should be in checked luggage. Hell, the airlines themselves tell you to put that in a carry-on.

Just travel with a disassembled serialized component from a omni-legal gun, like a bolt action 22 rifle. Just the frame/receiver, without even a barrel or bolt.  Can't be accused of wanting to to anything with it, it's legal almost anywhere in the US, but it gets you the same luggage treatment, where they have to store your luggage carefully and losing it is a "big deal" because the frame is considered a gun under the law. Just don't forget it in there and not declare it at the ticket desk.

If you could purchase a broken GLOCK lower, you could use a hacksaw to cut out just the serial number plate that's molded into the plastic under the front of the barrel:

Throw that into your luggage and BAM! there is your "firearm" (since it's the serialized part).

These days if i was flying someplace and i needed more than what i could have in a carry on i would just have it shipped to my hotel/ where ever i was staying and making the needed arrangements to have have to it accepted and held  for me , and send it back home the same way.  Likely cost more but my stuff would actually get there.

I used to fly internationally a lot. Lufthansa were by far the most incompetent bunch of hopeless bastards I've ever flown with.

Tvs not working in business class flying Frankfurt to Buenos Aires

Changed my connecting flight without telling me, giving me 30 minutes to change terminals, and splitting our travelling party between two flights, ruining our transfers.

Swore to me repeatedly that my luggage had made the transfer and was on my flight, when of course it hadn't, leaving me standing like an idiot waiting for bags which were still in another country.

None of this us a hanging offence, but they DID NOT GIVE A shiat about inconveniencing a huge group of people paying thousands.

Affirmative; and an amateur one that makes $0 off it, so when I manage to get my hands on a decent lens it becomes irreplaceable.  I don't use current generation bodies, so can get used replacements for reasonable cost from Adorama or the like.  After a few years of debate and backorder I finally got a 500pf, though, which I WILL fight a sky waitress for if I have to.

I was watching when he called out Lufthansa while at the table. At first, the announcers were a bit thrown off but then realized what he was doing.

Towards the end of the tournament they were streaming, they got tired of being asked repeatedly why all the players were wearing a white bracelet (which acts as a room key at the resort they were at) so they joked that it was a sign of solidarity for the player missing his luggage because all he had was a white t-shirt.

The camera guy was checking a proper road case full of gear. He kept getting stuff pilfered so started including a starter pistol so he could use his own locks IIRC.

2023-02-04 3:47:25 PM

drewogatory: so he could use his own locks IIRC

You can put your own locks on any bag you own. The locks don't have to be the TSA masterkeyed locks. The downside to this is that if you aren't there to give someone at TSA the key to open the bag if it requires a manual inspection, there is a chance they will use bolt cutters to remove your locks.

To use your own locks, you tell the airline check-in agent that your bag is locked and you have the keys. You tell them you need the bag to be screened and for them to promptly tell you it has cleared screening so you can go to the gate. Or, they promptly come back to you for the key[s] to open the bag so a TSA officer can screen it without cutting the locks. This requires you to get to the airport a little bit early to check the bag in and do this dance, but it can be done.

My personal locks of choice are Abloy Protec2 PL 321 padlocks. Virtually no one makes spare keys for that and the average person cannot pick them.
