"Good experience (but) won't see em again. Their set was new song focused and the crowd struggled to feel it," criticised a third.
"Been their biggest fan all my life and after that concert would never go again. Played a few old songs but mostly new rubbish that no one knows," someone else agreed

Ugh, major Star Wars " fan" energy. Seriously, so-called fans are just the worst whiners.

Yeah, sadly Aussies don't like much that's new, we generally like what's safe which is why it's inevitably tourists who get done by the wildlife here (to play up a Fark stereotype). The reality is there would not be a single radio station here playing new stuff by the Chili Peppers, they only get played on the "classic rock" format stations here, so that's all their "fans" know for the most part.

It's pretty weird to whinge about it though. whether you're listening to old songs about living in California where you used to do drugs but are doing much better now or new songs about living in California where you used to do drugs but are doing better now wouldn't make a huge amount of difference, one might think.

I don't think my local radio stations play any of their music from this century, either.

Well, I get the 'Real Rock Radio' station that mostly sticks to music over 30 years old, the Alternative station that's half stuck in the 90's, the 'variety' station that mostly plays bland stuff from the 80's and 90's that I didn't like the first time.  And some R&B and Country stations that I don't listen to.

RHCP has one decent song. It's the same one they've been recording and performing since 1986.

The new stuff must really be awful because If the bands any good it shouldn't matter whether they've heard the songs or not.  Or maybe they were never really fans to begin with.

I have this picture in my head of the average Aussie classic rock station that's nothing but 40-year-old Acca Dacca singles with the occasional Cold Chisel song thrown in every few days for spice.

The problem is that, without the old system of promotion that forced new songs down your throat for a few weeks until they were either hits or flops, they don't even bother playing it anymore more than a few times a week. You can't build on that, so the majority of people who want to see them but aren't superfans don't know it and get bored.

This becomes especially true when you're stuck in a style rut as deep as Frusciante has been for the past 20 years.

The main national classic rock station is the Triple M network, it's a mix of Aussie stuff plus US and UK, the occasional NZ band like Split Enz. As far as Aussie bands go ACDC get a run, often from the Bon Scott era (Jailbreak, Long Way to the Top), I reckon they play more Cold Chisel (it suits the station format better, and they had a lot of radio-friendly hits), some Midnight Oil, maybe some Powderfinger. But yeah else it's a lot of Pat Benetar, Simple Minds, Dire Straits, RCHP, maybe even a little Nirvana if they're feeling experimental, standard 'classic rock' stuff you'd hear anywhere in the western world.

You hardly ever hear a song you don't know, but I occasionally hear the station on a Sunday morning when they do their "almost accoustic" program of accoustic versions of the normal songs from the playlist. I almost enjoyed a version of Def Leppard's 'Animal' until I worked out what it was. Then I turned it off when they played a version of Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight' which completely lacked the only decent bit of the song - the huge drum intro a couple of verses in. Pointless.

It might because RHCP doesn't own or didn't want to pay the licensing rights to play their old songs.

I know I won't go to any Lauryn Hill concerts for this reason. If she decides to show up at all, she can't play the original version of her old music. She doesn't own the rights.

That might be difficult for fans to accept. It's also why "greatest hits" collections might have your favorite artist singing their favorite song, but it's not the original version of the song. The artist is paid for the performance and doesn't want to pay royalties, too.

I mean, they sold the rights for over $140 million less than two years ago. They should be able to afford the fees for playing their old stuff.

The Chili Peppers were great when they were a high energy novelty bar band. But I can't imagine them being able to play a huge venue and be compelling. I think the last time I saw them was at The Fillmore in SF and even that was too big. And what happened to the sax player? They had a sax player right? Or am I just senile?

You're thinking fishbone.

Anyways RHCP is weird that they had three massive wave of hits, blood sugar sex magic then decades later californication then decade later stadium Arcadia. That is unusual for a band. When they say play the hits what does that even mean with that catalog?

They played soul to squeeze that would be the song that made me happy, but my generation would want to hear under the bridge. They played pea which I really liked that album but problamaticlly I would like to hear areoplane. Etc.

They can't do a standard length set without forgoing huge parts of their fandom.

No way I'm confusing RHCP with Fishbone. I've seen Fishbone 20 times if I've seen them once. Anyway, dude's name was Tree evidently.

Tree returned to the band in 1989, playing tenor saxophone on the album Mother's Milk.[7] He also performed on the Mother's Milk Tour.[8]

Guys, guys. It's ok to admit that RHCP just aren't good anymore, and that they've been getting limper and more boring ever since they basically quit playing funk-metal and started letting Frusciante or whoever write the same goddamn downbeat meandery emo crap dirges over and over again.

Sometimes bands happen to hit it huge right at the moment they run out of ideas. It happens.

Is AC/DC Australia's biggest band still? I'm not sure they have sold more records than Kylie or the Bee Gees, but it's probably close between them.

Well I certainly assumed that I had liked Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Mother's Milk, and (the one I actually started with, like everyone) Blood Sugar Sex Magic a lot, but I have been drinking today, so who knows what the hell else I said. One Hot Minute was crap, and especially embarrassing when they TRIED to play faster stuff and couldn't. And By the Way sounded like a terrible RHCP cover band.

Californication would have been a perfect album to go out on. Frusciante's happy just making bedroom albums by himself, and Flea was never more interesting than what he was getting into with Thom Yorke.

I'm sure Kiedis could find any number of things to do and Chad looks tired, man.

I'm going to side with the disappointed ticket-buyers, here.

At this point, RHCP is a nostalgia act. They just are. People that see them live want to see them play the hits.

Any band/musician that has been at it for a long time reaches the point where their best music is behind them. RHCP has been at that point for 25 years.

My theory is that for a band, musician, or really *any* artist, there is a limited amount of "good ideas". They generally use them in in the first decade of their fame. After that, all they can do is diluted variations on what they have already done. At that point, they should stop with the new  material and just accept that they are going to live off of their past successes. Which is fine! It's awesome! If you can be a "living legend" (which is hyperbolic, but you know what I'm saying), why wouldn't you be?

thanksagainandagain: This thread makes me wanna listen to Jethro Tull, and I have no idea why.

For a band that's probably sold 75 million records it's weird that Tull is best remembered for winning their "make up" Grammy at the expense of Metallica who won a bunch more later, or as the ultimate "uncool" band, making Rush look like Ramones in that dept.
