Public schools are becoming a more effective political football because most upper-middle class voters don't send their children to ones that are failing. They are paying for great schools by moving into million dollar neighborhoods and keeping a hard lock on how those schools are run. The ones who don't like it are moving out to their own private school infrastructure like the Catholics did at the end of the 1800's.

This is an easy punt for Desantis because the people who will object probably don't send their kids to public schools.

Realistically, very few students were ever going to take AP African American Studies. It's a non-issue. But politically it's a gold-mine.

English teachers should put James Baldwin on their reading lists to flout both the 'Don't say black" and"Don't say gay" directives. Does DeSantis's verbiage make any distinction between literature and history?

Its actually, probably, the first definitive definition - with examples - for many Farkers who recognize that the backlash is bulls*** but to date don't fully understand what it is attempting to accomplish within the academic discipline.

She makes a good argument that the 1st goal is censorship, in general, but that by rolling is out with CRT and making up lies about it, they can justify the censorship, based on faux mosal outrage based on lies, to Republican voters.

Is it not common knowledge that White people enslaved, raped, murdered, tortured, and traded Black people for hundreds of years?

How about this for reparations. Every Black person in America who is descended from slaves is allowed to pick ten White people who will experience slavery for a period of ten years.

That would be more fair than what White people did to Black people.

What bothers me most, is that the attack isn't JUST on CRT, but the concept of intersectionality, period. That folks with varying backgrounds can simultaneously enjoy some degree of privilege while suffering from discrimination. That white gay men will have an entirely different experience than a black Trans man, or Latino Cis woman. That it illustrates how society tends to operate and the cards are stacked against some folks from multiple angles, This is the tack that the GOP really hates. Because it means that folks might become educated that their experience IS different, and that some sectors enjoy a good amount of privilege, while others are inherently discriminated against by a good chunk of society. This systemic issue terrifies that Far Right, because it exposes the lie that if you just work hard, good things will happen. And they can't have the peones realizing that the game is rigged from the start.

The Daily Show had DL Hughley on as a guest host, and in the course of his show the other night he commented "if you're poor, you're a n-word." It got a laugh, but its truer than people realize--poor whites are privileged only insofar as they're not black, and African-American studies helps shine a light on why this came to be.

Um...he's running.

He figured out the advantage he has over Trump right now is that he has actual power to do things.  He can spend this typically dead era of the election cycle going ultra-right and keeping his name in the news.

He'll be above the fray of the election until he announces and when he does all his accomplishments will compound his appeal to the Right.

Trump will show up to counter him as just being Trump.  DeSantis will show up having done for Florida all the things the base wanted Trump to do.

It's a set up for the return of race based voter suppression. Yes, thanks to gerrymandering, strategic poll closings and consolidations, strict ID laws, permissive challenges, etc, the vote is already suppressed along racial lines. But the GQP misses the days of poll taxes, literacy tests, and the glorious days before the 15th amendment allowed black men to vote, and the 19th which allowed women to vote.
Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, so step one to bringing back conservative paradise (and everyone else's hell) is to erase the collective memory of how incredibly damaging and evil conservative polices are.

It leads to examining how America treats its citizens, and how complicit the population is to it. And THAT is what worries people. That folks will realize that they've been buying into the system, because they enjoy a degree of privilege, and yet might come the realization that they've been in the wrong for doing so. THIS threatens the apple cart. To have folks opt out of being d*cks to other people, because the folks on the top NEED others to be d*cks to people, reflexively in order to KEEP them on top.

CRT touches on intersectionality, and what is particularly telling is that De Santis' statement specifically includes intersectionality as being one of the issues that he and his take the most umbrage from.

I've been working on being a better ally. Because I often pass as an average white dude. I'm a surprise Asian thanks to my Dad's genetics stomping my Mom's pretty hard. I'm a Cis man, but that doesn't mean that I'm blind to the what goes on around me. And it's nowhere near fair. Especially not in a system that actively protects douchenozzles entirely because they're straight white dudes.

We can do better as a country, and we need to educate folks on how to be better. Even in your fifties and sixties, you can educate yourself. And be better to those around you. We have the potential, and folks like De Santis and his buddies really HATE that idea. I mean, how DARE people might opt out of hating on folks?

"Intersectionality" is a dehumanizing philosophy that declares that you are not a person, you are a letter, and relegated to a box.  People do not have individual rights, they have whatever rights society has decided are proper for the box labeled by their assigned letter.  And true to Orwellian leftist thinking, "some letters are more equal than others".

The choice for GOP POTUS candidate is really a Kobayashi-Maru. Between Deathsentence and TFG, we see racism, anti-LGBTQ politics that are going to, at best disenfranchise a great deal of the population, and at worst, cause the death of many. Americans need to be very afraid at this point. I'm scared because I'm a neighbor to the north and I see it infiltrating our politics and population. It's amazing how the fascists are so vocal in calling everyone else fascists.

Yeah, this is a completely blinkered interpretation of the term "intersectionality", which argues that the legal system can't put people into a specific box because various life experiences and areas of discrimination create unique combinational experiences for individuals.
