Yeap, I noticed she looked so hot in Close Encounters as well. And Slapshot was hysterical overall with her performance particularly enjoyable.

Oh my goodness yes thank you. A fairly brief role but it was a gripping, emotional performance.

McGavin has been at least pretty good in anything I've seen him in, up to and including "The Delicate Delinquent", a Jerry Lewis movie.  Never seen him turn in a bum performance.

NO ONE could've played the mother in A Christmas Story better than her....full stop. Loved it when she tried the soap. Also, the ending scene with her and Darren McGavin in front of the lit Christmas tree in the dark - absolutely farkin' perfect!

I liked her. I was remembering Close Encounters and how the aliens looked like kids, similar to her son in the movie. I'm thinking the aliens chose that form BECAUSE it looked like her son. They were trying to pick her up! It all makes sense now. Imagine their disappointment when they realized Dreyfuss's character was the one going with them. Probably the only alien who wasn't sad about this was the head of the anal probing department. It takes a lot to bum that alien out.

Actually, I'm glad I hadn't seen her in anything else yet (or realized it was her) or I would have been howling with laughter at that. She's just so unhingedly over the top in everything I've ever seen her in. (never seen West Wing everyone says I need to see it but they're not my supervisor!)

Back to the thread, Melinda Dillon was the actor who really set the mood of the whole Close Encounters experience for me. There was just such a wholesomeness to her insanity.

Yeah.  I saw that and Close Encounters in the theater during their original theatrical releases.  She seemed 8-10 years younger than that.  She definitely didn't seem close in age to my 82 y.o. mother. 🤷🏼‍♀

Divisive?  You mean, whether or not its the greatest movie in film history???
Its been consistent in my top 5, ever since seeing it in '99.

/though i will say, i became slightly less impressed with it after seeing Robert Altman's Short Cuts, a few years ago, where its clear Paul Thomas Anderson borrowed/homaged a lot from.
