On Friday evening, Astoria police said that the boat Labonte was in had been stolen, and that he was wanted by police in Victoria, B.C. and was the man caught on security footage putting a fish on the porch of 'The Goonies' house.

The transition from the Pacific ocean into the Columbia river is extremely treacherous. Cargo ships from afar wait for a local pilot to come aboard and direct navigation as they enter the river. This is not the spot to flex that your dad owns a cool boat, IMHO.

The Columbia River Bar Coasties are the biggest adrenaline junkies ever. When the weather gets bad enough that all the other boats come in, the Coasties go OUT. For training. How else are they going to learn what happens when a boat drifts beam to the waves? Also if your boat loses power and you drift beam to the waves, how else are you going to learn how to survive the boat rolling (like in the vids in TFA) or pitchpoling (flipping end over end)? (Answer: the Coasties wear harnesses & clip in at 3 separate points. And yes, they roll & occasionally pitchpole those hi-powered floating engines they call boats.)

For true entertainment, use Mr. Google to search the phrase "columbia river bar coast guard training" & treat yourself to a whole bunch of USCG training shorts.

The swimmer dude who said when they got the rescue call, they all played rock-paper-scissors to see who'd be going in the water? He wasn't saying he'd WON that game.

\ Been in 30' waves for about 12 hours during a voyage between Easter Island & Chile as crew on a sail-training boat. Prefer to never see another wave that high when afloat. Especially bc there are waves that commonly get much higher than that.
