"Suspects are ramming police vehicles attempting to flee, and only by the grace of god has an officer not been seriously injured," Lowe said.

Because God, you idiot?

You're too stupid to have a firearm.

You know what?

Sure.  This is fine.

Obviously they've just created a situation where every case is going to require the cops to actually prove/attest in court that the vehicle with the tag on it is actually the one they were pursuing (they have essentially just used technology to create a minor chain-of-custody issue for themselves), but that just means the inevitable abuse is going to cause prosecutions to fail and the cops doing it properly will have to do ten more seconds of paperwork ctrl+c'ing an image from a dashboard cam into their report with the license plate.

Meanwhile, they don't chase people around and create entirely new dangerous situations for both the person they're chasing and random unrelated people.  Win/win.

I'm not the biggest fan of the cops but this seems like a fairly legitimate method to let them accomplish something that it is actually appropriate for them to be doing in a manner that's significantly less pants-on-head than their default idiocy.  Go for it.

"Or we could just allow cops to, ya know, chase criminals. pass legislation that has a mandatory minimum of 5 years for evading police."

As per the common rules of Tag, I assume it is kosher to pass the tag on to another car.  Realistically, I'd go for a bus or garbage truck, though diplomatic plates clearly trumps all.

Maybe I only skimmed TFA, but how is the tag 'deployed?'
Darts, magnets, glue?

I'm honestly surprised that they haven't yet convinced Congress that they need to force auto makers to provide a remote kill switch for all new vehicles.

How are they going to prove who was driving the car? They already have plate readers, so they know who the car is registered to, but without evidence showing who was driving there's not much they can do once they track the car down. I don't see how this will be much different.

Hate to give that side more ideas, but what if the cop sets a magnetic tracker on the back of the car during a stop? Takes it with them when concluded. If that wouldn't be legal, what about this same car system which is armed during a stop and fires automatically if the car takes off before the cop disarms it at the end of the stop.

dammit just give me a login: Hate to give that side more ideas, but what if the cop sets a magnetic tracker on the back of the car during a stop? Takes it with them when concluded. heres a link to the company's product sheet
https://www.starchase.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/02/Vehicle-Mounted-GPS-Launcher-17FEB2021.pdf

basically its a air cannon on the cop's front bumper.  launching a thing with some kind of glue or epoxy on it.
the cop has a key fob thing.  so the theory is he pulls up behind the car when he makes the traffic stop and has his finger on the button and if they start putting the car into gear or whatever he hits the button and it tags the car before they can get any distance away.

honestly just popping a magnetized thing on the car when they walk up the first time would seem a lot simpler.  but at the same time cops are kind of assholes and i could see them scratching my car up with that.  and i could also see them forgetting it and claiming i fled with it to cover their mistake.  so i kinda prefer this way.
