The intensity of the fighting is insanely high right now, as are the casualties.  From the NY Times:

At two meetings last month between senior military and defense officials from NATO and partner countries, officials said the fighting in the Donbas had turned into, as one of them put it, a meat grinder... Gen. Eirik Kristoffersen, Norway's defense chief, said estimates were that Russia had suffered 180,000 dead and wounded, while Ukraine had 100,000 killed or wounded in action along with 30,000 civilian deaths.

The last public Biden administration estimate of casualties came last November, when Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said that more than 100,000 troops on each side had been killed and wounded since the war began. At the time, officials said privately that the numbers were closer to 120,000.

In other words, in the last two months, estimates for Russian killed & wounded have jumped by 60k, from 120k to 180k.  Meaning about a third of their casualties have happened in just the last two months, due to the human wave attacks they are conducting with prisoners & barely trained recruits against Ukrainian defenses.

Ukraine has been suffering high losses too, but nothing like the Russians over the last two months.  November?  Even casualties.  Today?  Lots more dead Russians.  But does that change the war?  Probably not... these were people that Russia didn't care about at all.  Prisoners and minorities, mostly.  If a thousand died to take down one Ukrainian solider, Russia probably looked at that as a glorious victory.  After all, there are millions more prisoners & minorities where those came from.

Yes, and I do believe that as long as we keep ramping up weapon production & delivery, Ukraine has a good chance of kicking the Russians out.

But the combined casualties will be over a million people before this is done.  And big swaths of Ukraine are just ruins now.  The cost of Russian aggression is just staggering.
