(Some Guy)   Canada's only American college football team, Simon Fraser, to be dropped by NCAA D-II Lone Star Conference after 2023 season due to border crossing issues, dreadful record. Their road to relevance just got 10 yards longer   (3downnation.com) divider line

There's gotta be an easier border they can cross into Texas

That team should never have been competing in the NCAA, they have always been legendarily bad and profs have reported a lot more concussions among football players since they started playing against much larger, much better coached NCAA athletes.

Didn't they get beaten pretty well by UBC this year in the inter league game?  I'm kind of wondering if Canadian rules, namely the 1 yard of the ball for the defence result in fewer concussions.

Though yes they should just give in and rejoin Usports. Competing against schools in the NCAA that surely have better scholarships should like a losing idea

I didn't realize the NCAA had a rouge program.

However, the GNAC dropped football ahead of last season, leaving their three remaining members - SFU, Central Washington, and Western Oregon - to partner with the Lone Star.

My dad was a professor at CWU, and football and basketball games against Simon Fraser were a regular part of my childhood. Crossing into and out of Canada was nothing. Sad to see that little rivalry end. NBA coach Jay Triano played there.

We did this.   We overreacted and made it more difficult to cross into Canada and back and for no good reason.   Security theater has real world consequences and they are mostly not good.

They were decent their first few years. They even had a .500 record one year.

But the the Kelly Bates era was abysmal. Things just got from bad to worse. Their win over West Texas was the most meaningful game they had in years.

And they shouldn't have changed their name. If they did, then it should've been anything other than "Red Leafs". I mean, they live on a mountain. The name Highlanders is right farking there -- preserves the Scottish heritage while eliminating the racist overtones.

No. Final score 18-17 UBC.

It was a tight no-scoring game in the first half. SFU led throughout the second half. UBC won on a game winning drive with 24 seconds left. But it was pretty exciting because the last 5 mins of the 4th quarter were all game winning drives -- lead changed hands multiple times.

That's the local atom smasher. Not sure what it has to do with sports.
