After Folhasent questions to Santos's office in Portuguese, the paper got a response that said Santos does not understand the language. Santos has given interviews in Portuguese and is the son of Brazilians. The congressman did not respond to the questions when sent in English, even though he has claimed to be the author of the King James Bible and all of William Shakespeare's plays and sonnets.

why is Santos facing fraud charges in Brazil?  where, actually, is he from?
I mean, i don't care about immigration, but you have to be an american citizen to be in government, right?

You have to be an American citizen for at least 7 years before you can be eligible to be a House Representative.

At this point I'm not even sure he's from Brazil. Or this planet. It's like some zany comedy where a space alien tries to blend in through mimicry, does everything just wrong enough and still ends up being President of Earth.

Given how he's lied about damn near everything else, has anyone confirmed his citizenship?

All attempts to find out who is responsible for this have resulted in fingers pointed elsewhere.  There doesn't seem to be any investigation into candidate qualification, at any level, at any point.

The House has accepted him as a member, the only way he's out before the end of the term is death or the GQP expelling a member of the GQP.

Supposedly Santos was born in the US to Brazilian immigrant parents, which would make him a US citizen by birth. I say "supposedly" because I haven't seen any independent sources for this information apart from Santos' own PR. He apparently spent his childhood in the US, moved to Brazil (where he was a drag queen and criminal), then moved back to the US

He could be expelled from the House, but that would require Republican support. The prevailing wisdom is that any GOP candidate running in the special election to replace him would be blown out by voters angry about Santos, so House republicans don't want to do anything about the situation for fear of upsetting their majority

Because there is no government body that investigates this BEFORE the election, either.

You're not alone.  Euro Portuguese has got some middle and back of mouth sounds that are reminiscent of sounds you hear in some of the eastern european languages like Ukrainian...'sh' and 'zh' and an 'R' sound I can't think of how to write out but like if you were at the very start of hocking a lougie or maybe gargling water gently.

It really threw me for a loop the first time I heard it.

The outlet reports that Vasconcelos is believed to have paid for the killing. He reportedly went to the mechanic's house with a few other men on the morning of December 3, 2004. Vasconcelos was in the Navy at the time, Folha reports.
After serving five years in prison, he was moved to house arrest in 2009. He started studying law around that time as well.
Last June, Vasconcelos was released.

I mean, it's certainly a strange story for this guy's background, but he's done his time and has a new job, so I wouldn't call him a bad lawyer for it.
