Interesting coincidence. The film studios are in the Cardington Sheds - the home of His Majesty's Airship R101.
Another shipwreck.

Like everyone who thinks they'd survive a zombie apocalypse when they'd be eaten before the opening credits.

Didn't these players realize they were signing up to a reality show based on one of the most sinister, bloody survival dramas ever made?

The quote gets even dumber: "When it comes to these sorts of games, I'm good at them. They're games of chance, luck and wit. I live for that sort of thing."

So this guy thought he was going to beat out 455 other players in a series of games that, according to him, are 2/3 luck. I bet his retirement portfolio is a bunch of scratch-offs.

inherent to the commission, notes one unscripted producer, is the tension that people actually die in the drama, "so everyone will be looking at how far you'll push the contributors. If people don't die, will it ever come close?

I begin to see the foundation of some of the issues discussed.

I mean it doesn't sound fun but I was expecting something a lot more scandalous given the length and exposé tone of the article.  So you had to stand still in the cold (32 degrees F, not like ten below zero) for a few hours?  To win five million dollars?

I mean not that I could or anything, but that's why I wouldn't sign up in teh first place...

Thing is that locations are reserved far in advance. They couldnt change the day without having to wait months for it to be redone.

As for why you wouldnt dress warm when its cold out.....I got nothing for that kind of stupidity

According to the article, contestants were made to wear the jumpsuits like the characters in the show.  They could wear their coats when not shooting, but once the camera was rolling they had to remove them.  It looks like they were also provided thermal underwear and socks, but that's not doing much in 32 degrees.

And yeah, it's hard to reschedule on a whim.  But that's why the production company should've booked a backup date when they booked the original.

So...clearly no one understood the point of Squid Game.

The biggest issue seems to be completely underestimating how big the giant mess of getting 456 people through the game would be.

Long johns and such should have been enough to deal for a couple hours, but there was not a chance in hell that they complete that in two hours regardless of the weather.

I liked it better when it was called The Running Man... I'll go as far as to say, if it weren't for Stephen King, Survivor and The Amazing Race never would've existed.

Contestants - who weren't paid to participate in the series - say they were told the actual game would take roughly two hours to play and shoot, but instead that turned into an almost seven-hour ordeal for some contenders.

Tell me you've never been on a movie set without telling me you've never been on a movie set.

And if you go from the book, Cops and every bounty hunting and fugitive capture reality show ever.

The book also had that "well, we're never going to film that version" ending too.

(Sources close to the production say the wait time increased to allow independent adjudicators to assess the gameplay.)

The original show should have done this.  Instead of having the creepy robot scan for and kill people instantly, they have a judges' table with those angry PlayStation buttons conferring for 10-15 minutes on each contestant.  Cut to the replay booth (sponsored by Microsoft Surface!), some guy in front of two dozen screens going frame by frame, back and forth, from multiple angles, then he calls it down and one of the PlayStation buttons pulls out a pistol to deliver the ruling.

I read it once... before the Swarzenegger film... then i read it again a few years ago... It is so good, on its own.. Totally up for a reboot.    I imagined a young Christian Bale the 2nd time around, though he's much too old now.

I see what you mean about the ending....  Won't spoil it here for others... hiats a little too close to home.

There's currently a remake in production being done by Edgar Wright.  I love the original film and I'm not usually big on remakes, but I am really excited for this one.

I'm absolutely shocked that they'd drop the temperature in a room where they would want contestents to stand absolutely still.

And the film version of The Running Man inspired American Gladiators.

Game shows can be a little different. I've competed on 3 game shows and attended the taping of a 4th. Three of them (Jeopardy, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Masterminds) filmed each episode in 40 minutes. The other one, however, (The Chase - Game Show Network version) took 4 hours to film a single 1-hour episode.

I'm STILL waiting on Frank Darabont to do The Long Walk.

Darabont missed his chance (as much as I would have loved to have seen that).  His rights lapsed.  Now New Line is working on it with someone else.

The British native was among roughly 228 contestants immediately eliminated from "Squid Game: The Challenge" on Jan. 23 in a game of "Red Light Green Light" that will go down in the annals of reality TV history.
