There's some plausible logic here.  The car has electrically controlled brakes for one, and if you cycle the code maybe those get released for a time.  Also, if you are reseting the accelerometers, they could come to treat your inclined state as level, such that when you move to level ground it thinks you are on a hill.

Or maybe it's just lawyers being the worst.

I guess they assume all i4 owners have a level garage and didn't think this safety measure would affect most people, let alone make it to an article.

I don't get why people have made this story a "thing."

Would you change a tire on an incline?

Oh no! An inconvenience that is even less of an inconvenience than brushing my teeth in the morning! Where's my fainting couch!!!

So, it won't work on my driveway, good to know.

Find me a parking spot that is exactly level!

As for why they did this, I expect that engineers identified a possibility, however remote, that the software could release the parking brake in the process of initializing.  Better to ensure that the vehicle is not going to roll easily than to suffer lawsuits for damage, injuries, or deaths.

Exactly level? Maybe not.

Level within whatever range this sensor would accept as flat ground? No problem. I can see one outside my window right now.

Hey now, BMWs are not overpriced money pits.

They are money pits which deliver an appropriate amount of value for the price.

My money pit is 10 days old and I LOVE IT.

Computer might be doing a reset on some position/inclination sensor so it requires some flatness?

Recalibrating an accelerometer is what I'm thinking. Probably want the car on a flat surface while it self-tests on all the fancy handling stuff.

Or, hear me out on this one... equip cars with manual parking brakes?

As a software guy, given the constraints that have already been mentioned in this thread as well as TFA, I'd recommend ensuring the car was on flat ground during updates. No lawyer involved in the decision.

Computers need to return to a baseline state after an update, which is why your computer needs to be rebooted after updating. The baseline for this car is flat ground. I know it's stupid, but you don't want the car's sensors miscalibrated. That could end up with things all crashy.

I dunno. Apple has severely over priced products. And it doesn't take a genius to go on eBay and source an item that has more features than any Apple product for a fraction of the price. I kind of understand why this makes a lot of peoples blood boil.

For what it's worth I don't entirely disagree, but with that said, if I set a center-console-mounted parking brake I've found my wife can't release it, and if she sets such then it doesn't always get set tightly enough.

Foot-set, hand-released brakes like were popular even into the early nineties don't have this problem, but are probably never going to make a return.

quo vadimus: Would you change a tire on an incline?

Ever gotten a flat while off-road?  Did you take the time to create a hard, flat, level surface nearby so you could change it under comfortably familiar conditions?

No, I haven't. So I'm that situation you just throw it up on one jack and change it just like normal? I honestly don't know, but it doesn't sound like an awesome proposition. Especially with the <5 inches of clearance on the bmw.

My point about it being the most minor of inconveniences not deserving of becoming a national outrage stands.

And BMW didn't think to sell a $180 rfid equipped wheel chock set? Kinda disappointed, Beems.

No, because if I felt I was going to kill myself, I'd call a tow.

Do you change your tire in the literal ditch. In the soft mud, sand and grass?
