Here is the thing.

I have no problem if netflix says my inlaws or my mom can't free load off me. They should have their own damn accounts.

I don't want to jump through 50 hoops though because i am visiting, or have 2 houses.

Likewise i shouldn't have to be in a premium tier to have UHD or whatever its farking called, even though at most, someone MAY be watching 2 devices at once.

Basically their tier structure is all wonky. I'm hard pressed  to value netflix at 20 bucks a month compared to other services at this point and the only thing that keeps it there is because others freeload off me and i'd feel bad cutting them off.

Ultimately what they are going to do is end up in the rotation with other streamers where i'll dip in for a couple of months once there is a backlog of content i want to see, burn through the content and i want, and then dip out for a while.

That isn't necissarily a bad thing from a consumer, but hurts their bottom line.

Just come up with better tiers, including, "your relatives and ex girlfriend can continue to be deadbeats, and you look like a nice guy" plan. Hell, price it higher, so i can wave it in their face, i'll pay it.

But fix your lower tiers jackasses.

I still don't see the big deal.

Are times so tough that people are unable to pay $10 a month or whatever for per account? Or are they just too cheap?

/ yes, I know where I am

They have a tier where you pay extra to be able to stream on two to four devices at once.  It shouldn't matter where you're watching or who is watching because you're paying to be able to do that.

Why? If you have a plan that allows 2 or 4 devices simultaneously, what is the technical difference where those 2 or 4 devices are?

Because they knew that was a fake selling point. If you're using the account across multiple households, you might actually get to use the promised number of simultaneous screens. They were not expecting people to really use that feature even as they sold it to them.

Cancel all Netflix accounts.

Punish them with bankruptcy.

Problem solved.

Both our kids signed up for Netflix in college.  As far as I know, they didn't share passwords. However, they did view Netflix content on their own college campuses, their friends' college campuses during visits, and while visiting out of town relatives. I can't imagine either of them paying for the service out of their own meager funds if the service only worked at one address or they had to verify some B.S. every single month just to use it.

We're definitely getting the quality of journalism we pay for.

Netflix announced this back in March 2022: https://au.finance.yahoo.com/news/netflix-to-charge-you-for-sharing-your-password-225150822.html

FTFA: Netflix said the new system would first be rolled out in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru, but didn't say when it would affect other countries. ... "We'll be working to understand the utility of these two features for members in these three countries before making changes anywhere else in the world."

Breathless journalists who do no research thinking they've stumbled onto something.

This was no accident. Netflix wrote an excessively draconian (and fake) password policy they could pull back, so their real policy wouldn't seem so bad.

The $10 or whatever isn't the issue. It's that whatever anti-sharing solution they implement will either....

1 - Not effectively stop sharing

or

2 - Generate false positives and cause people headaches who aren't violating the rules

It's just how the technology works. Fark, as a whole is far more tech savvy than the general population, so you have a lot of people annoyed that they will end up with headaches down the road.

I don't share my account, but I have lots of devices and I use Netflix from a lot of places. I want it to work seamlessly when I'm at home, or on my personal VPN, or my cellphone or my work phone or my work VPN and I don't want any hiccups when I travel. Especially when I'm traveling because I'm desperate for entertainment.

Netflix used to be reliable and easy. It even let me download stuff to my devices to use without internet access. Awesome.

But if I can't count on Netflix, it's not worth it. It was marginally easier than piracy, but piracy always works for me, and it's cheaper.

When Netflix was still a tiny company... before they drove Blockbuster into bankruptcy for being dicks to their customers... they used to encourage password sharing.

Now they're just the same corporate dicks Blockbuster used to be.

FTA:
"The streamer is aware that many users may cancel their subscription because of these measures, but estimates that they will increase revenue for the company in the long run."

Go fark yourself Netflix. I celebrated when Blockbuster kicked the bucket. I'll do the same when you do too.

Why not just limit each account to one stream only? (Or N streams depending on subscription tier?)

You're starting to stream on a two stream account, but you're currently streaming to two devices? Well, we just won't service that third stream.

If they want to actually limit the freeloading, put a MAC address whitelist on the accounts and say 2-3 swaps a month. Unless you're breaking your phone weekly, that should be more than sufficient to take care of 95% of customer needs.

/I'm not savvy enough to know how to prevent MAC spoofing, though.

yea, how many on the whitelist? family of four and a pair of in-laws elsewhere

four smart TVs
four laptops/computers
four phones
few tablets/switches
-probably still missing a screen or two

It always seems to be the same, doesn't it? New company looks good and supplants previous, old company that loves being a dick to customers, then turns into the thing they killed within a decade or so.

That's how it works currently, but they don't like it because all the streams aren't in the same household. It's very, very stupid.

If they were smart, they'd tie this "feature" to additional subscription tiers.  Pay X dollars for 2 "home" devices and 1 "roaming" device, etc.  Monetize password sharing.

A lot of modern phones by default use a MAC randomizer for additional security protection.

Yep. I don't share my logins with anyone but I travel a lot for work while my kids and wife watch different shows. I'm playing for the 4 screen plan. If they hassle me even once while I'm trying to watch something after a long day in an unfamiliar city then I'll drop it without a second thought.

/ I really need to drop it anyway

I don't have Netflix but I am still upset that this will ruin the completely annecdotal and fake stories on the internet about exes still using someone's Netflix after a long amount of time. Adding to my hysteria, they might make a catchy new word for it even though we have plenty of words already. On the other hand, my minimalist youtube channel where I explain antennae and broadcast tv is likely to see an uptick.

As a whole, compared to the general US population, yes.

For the record, I lose my shiat when I hit a paywall too, but I'd still be considered tech savvy on any reasonable scale.

Basing the limits on "max concurrent streams" is probably not a workable option because I assume there's a HUGE difference between maximum theoretical usage and average usage, even among multi-user accounts. It would be a radical change, unlike any streaming service, if they were to implicitly bless sharing with only that limit in place.

I don't have an issue with Netflix pricing and don't share them or any other streamer outside the household. But their revolutionary model was always centered on simplicity and convenience, and a password sharing system like the retracted one sounds like it would put that at great risk.

"For a brief time yesterday, a help center article containing information that is only applicable to Chile, Costa Rica, and Peru, went live in other countries," the spokesperson said, adding, "We have since updated it."

But they posted it in English.
