Benny Hill irritated the schit outa me with his sexiest leering and bad low ball jokes. The base slapstick was, repetitive, insensitive, and obnoxious, as was the music. Good riddance Benny.

Breaking News: Benny Hill was a dirty old man who was inappropriate with women

/the show never led you to believe this, so I for one was shocked

The basic premise of his show was sexual assault.

A man who played a mincing pervert on TV turned out to be mincing pervert in real life?
I am shocked!

The Benny Hill theme contribute more to pop culture than most.

Sounds like he was socially awkward. That's too bad as all that mess could have been avoided. It's probably difficult to be around that many unattainable women. Someone should have stepped in with therapy.

SJ Perelman told a story about trying to write for the Marx Brothers. Who were they? he had the audacity to ask. The head of the studio scarified Perelman for being dense. For Harpo he sad, "One of them is a mute who picks up spit."  Since in real life, Harpo was a devoted family man, I had always assumed that Hill was coming at his chasing from that direction.

My dad loved this stuff. I honestly thought he was funny, but I was in my early teens, so why not?
Shocked/not shocked that he was a lonely incel. But I've heard the stories before.

He was bad burlesque, to be sure. The warm up act for the strippers.

I loved his show as an 8-12 year old. The syndicated run was the best kickoff to a Friday night a pubescent boy could ask for. My favorite role of his however, was the cover art of Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego

The man responsible, John Howard Davies from Thames Television, explained: "Benny was all right when he was young, but when you're in your 60s, it's a slightly different matter to leer at a pretty girl."

It is?  Sorry everybody, that means the Entertainment tab has to go.

And his whole life was a borderline tragedy. His parents instilled such a sense of thriftiness in him so even though he was rich, he never enjoyed his money. He never went out to fancy places to eat. He subsited in his later years almost entirely on frozen fish sticks he would buy in bulk from a grocery store he would walk to because he wouldn't pay for a taxi. He never had a girlfriend, was awkward around women, and was constantly hounded by rumours that he was gay.

Right after he died the worst thing the tabloids could find out about him is that sometimes he would befriend strangers on the bus and invite them over for lunch towards the end of his life.

I've known people like this and it truly is sad.

What he did "back in the day" was still considered to be acdeptable to a certain degree so it's not fair to judge him by today's standards. I was incredibly socially awkward when young and, believe it or not, found that when I'd now and again make a racy joke/comment to a hot gal you can bet your ass that more often than not I got a smile out of it. That went a LONG way but at the time I had no idea why but it made me feel more like I was doing something not offensive.
But that was "back in the day" when people didn't get offended at every lmis-step one might make over the course of their lives.

I haven't seen any Benny Hill show material in 40 years or so, but man did he have some hot ladies on there.

Too bad he was apparently unable to conduct himself properly, as was the case with so many male celebs throughout show biz history.  His kind of schtick with the ladies wouldn't fly today but a lot of the other stuff was quite funny.

I read BH always kept a notebook handy. When he got an idea for a skit, sketch or joke he would write it down and work it out even if he didn't intend to use it. BH felt it was important to sharpen his creative skills. I admire that. My WWII Dad loved The BH Show, I watched a lot of those episodes with Dad in my youth.

I think he was the classic clown, laughing on the outside and crying on the inside. I had read he proposed marriage a few times but was turned down, but the women were always out of his league. Also read where he was told to have heart surgery in his later years but declined. I think he was desperately lonely.

He had a lonely life. They didn't even figure out he had died until his body started stinking up the place and they sent someone to investigate the smell. He had been dead for a few days at that point.

I loved Benny Hill back in the day. My whole family watched his show every Sunday night when I was still quite young. Followed by old episodes of the Ernie Kovaks Show. Good times. But then we did not think much about what was going on behind the scenes. Different time.

I probably saw every episode of this show, which came on at 11:30 PM weeknights (right after Prisoner: Cell Block H). Until TFA I had no idea Daphne Moon was on Benny Hill.

Both shows were broadcast on the local PBS station and shown uncensored. Between Benny Hill's leering vaudeville act and a fairly lusty Australian Women in Prison show, there was always a pretty good chance you'd be seeing some boobs, which in 1980s suburban Michigan was a really big deal.

Benny Hill should be recognized as one of the greatest comedians and entertainers in history.  All those skits and songs he wrote and performed spanning decades, they still stand up when I catch a show even today.  No hate coming from this post.
