Doctorow's post is brilliant, well worth the read. I've never seen the malaise of the last few decades expressed so clearly, or encapsulated so well into a singe word

Yeah, before I clicked I thought, "enshiattification, Doctorow". Hurray for me, I guess.

Doctorow writes some excellent essays and social media threads. The threads can be giant time sinks for me as I end up reading them and a bunch of stuff he links to, and sometimes stuff those articles link to, and... yeah. I must find his recommended reads consistently interesting.

The past tense cheating happiness?
The past tense shiats happiness?

Googling: Your whole string doesn't exist on the internet until now, but...
Vergangenheit = past, the past tense

scheißigungen = shiats, but google translate thinks bescheißigungen means "cheating". Seems suspect. The "be" prefix apparently just changes intransitive to transitive normally.

freude = joy
heit = the suffix "ness"

I'm sure my attempt to google up a translation of that mess has a flawless result!

Vergangenheitsbewältigung is a big theme in German postwar literature and film - literally "coming to terms with the past." I just threw some shiat at the end of it for a cheap joke.

(I would add that the very platform on which I am writing this post, WordPress, began its own march to enshiattification when it replaced its "classic" editor, which allows a writer to simply write, with the "block" editor, which imagines that the act of writing is a Lego game played with sentences.)

Oh, my God-it's the farking truth.

And then, when WP had a widget that allowed you to continue using the Classic Editor, they then yanked the widget with no warning. A pox on their house!
