Hey.

Maybe if every single one of your crappy local dealers wasn't inflating the pricing on your most popular cars- turning them off of fords forever-   maybe your results would be better.

In August of 2021 I ordered a Ford Maverick thru the website and it was assigned to a local dealer.  The local dealer then "Lost" the order, sorry.  Then somehow by Magic the exact same on i ordered ended up their lot marked up over $10k.   Called the dealer, they lied, I called Ford and they pretty much confirmed the dealer stole it from under me.  The dealer went into my order and changed my contact info, so it sat hidden somewhere for 30 days and then they sold it.     I then put another order with another dealership when the 2023 order bank opened up, now at least I get an email every 45 days saying "We still have your order, but it isnt even scheduled to be built due to 'supply chain issues'".

Point, dont promise what you cant deliver and you know your dealers are sh.t, but yet you still will not force an meaning full change.

Had me worried - in December of 2021 I bought a Maverick from dealer stock. But I sure as hell didn't pay a markup on it.

It's a great little truck, but it's not worth more than the sticker price.

I'm a tall guy. With my leg length+torso length, Ford is the only car manufacturer who makes cars I fit into. They were the only compact cars I could ever drive. *Shrug*.

/CSB: I once went to a Toyota dealership to see if I could fit into a Tacoma or a Tundra. After trying out a few, the salesman told me "I never thought I'd ever say this to anyone in my life, but you should probably go buy an F-150."

I ordered a ranger for work back in June was supposed to have it beginning of January, now they're telling me April. I also was going to order an F350 (with utility body) for work and that was a 500 day delivery which I now hear is up to 24 months.

This is one of those data vs anecdote situations. While your local dealer might have been shorted by the supply chain, over all the toplline beat expectations by $4B. The problem is that they are in the middle of a shift towards EV and that kind of thing always takes longer than you think.

Well, if they actually built good cars that people wanted to buy. I own two; 2016 Fusion and 2013 SHO. They are both sort of shiatboxes. The Fusion is finally reliable after fixing a bunch of stupid stuff. (fingers crossed) Emission line that caused the car to fart out of the fuel filler. Shift cable bushing that would leave you stranded or let the car roll down the driveway. That was neat!

The SHO is fun but expensive to own. Thanks to the genius design to run the water pump off the timing chain, and burying it deep inside the engine, you will get to replace the whole shebang around 90k miles and pay ~$3500. Oh, and if the mode actuator goes bad, and it will, have fun trying to replace that $25 part.

And the electronics on both are hilarious. Bluetooth just randomly stops working. So you disconnect the battery for an hour and then things work fine for a month or two.

Their trucks are good, I must admit. My 06 F150 is still going great after replacing the fuel injectors. Well, the cruise control switch failed, but it was easy to replace. Oh, I forgot that the gauge cluster has an issue that causes the parking brake light to stay on all the time. But otherwise, yeah, great truck.

I'll probably never purchase another Ford product. And their dealerships, in this case, Lewis Ford in Fayetteville, AR, suck.

If they're selling before they arrive, like, everything is selling as factory orders, there wouldn't be any cars on the lot even though they're making plenty of money.

How tall are you? I'm 6'4 and pretty fairly distributed (like, it's not that my legs are freakishly long) - also pretty broad shouldered (I sound fat) - and I fit comfortably into a 2010 Nissan Sentra.

When I went car shopping, it was the only car I fit into and could put my hand on my head without it hitting the ceiling - some SUVs included. I even tried it vertically, and my hand still had room between the top of my head and the roof.

I entertained the idea of getting a bronco. The sticker on the window said the car was 55% US made. Engine was US, trans is China. Not paying $60k for something with a Chinese transmission in it.

6'7''. Back in the 90's I used to drive an Escort, random strangers would laugh when I got out of it. I used to tell people that I would step into it and zip it up. I had the seat all the way back, pressed against the back seat. When I checked the blind spot, I would look out the rear passenger window. But it was still okay. I drove it coast to coast at least six times.

I hadn't realized how I'd gotten used to always being uncomfortable until I finally did get an F-150. The wife says it's the only car she's ever seen me in that looks size-appropriate. I miss the 30mpg I used to get in my hybrid Escape, but one of these days I'll be able to afford a Lightning, and then everything will align.

Like you I've been amazed how I can't fit in gigantic SUVs. The worst was when I rode in a Hummer - even in the passenger seat with the seat all the way back, my knees were jammed against the dash. A lot of those big cars are built for small people who want to be in a big car. <Insert freudian joke here>.

Personally, I'd be happy if the cab of my truck was put into a smaller car. Parking this truck is a PITA. I just want the legroom and the headroom, the rest of it is only a vehicle.

That dealership system has needed to be disrupted for decades now

2023-02-03 8:26:11 PM
I have said this many times over the years. What is special to me about Ford is that they always have an excuse. I think I have seen them all. And they are always vague and don't really stand up to scrutiny. I think I can say always.

It's the Japanese, or manipulation of the yen, or the competition, or a change in the market they did not anticipate, or a failed product, or a failed strategy, or some predecessor, or ... whatever. This time, the CEO is just admitting that it could be this or that or the other, "but we are definitely on top of it... whatever it is." He is not even trying this time. Who can say he is wrong when he says nothing definite? He ought to be fired for shrugging.

IT has been noted upthread that sales are way up? I guess? But they are not getting profit from that... I guess?

Well, going back a few years, they cut a whole bunch of models and decided to just emphasize a few of their winners and just do that. We have been watching a process of Ford getting smaller and leaner, for a couple of decades now. And NOW, their CEO is going to make them even smaller and even leaner, even though they are not satisfying their current and wannabe customers. Apparently, their plan is to give up more and more market share for profitability. They don't want to make cars. They want to make money.

I am not an expert, but I think a lot of car companies are not paying attention to what is going on. They are chasing too many rabbits.

I agree. Look at Toyota for instance. They sell gasoline cars, diesel cars, hybrids, PHEVs, and an EV, but they're also trying to develop solid state batteries, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, hydrogen combustion engines, a new EV platform to replace their latest failed project, and all while the upper management is shuffled around because the CEO ragequit after some people on the internet were mean to him.

With the quality control issues at Ford and the lack of direction at Toyota, we're getting ready to see some big shakeups in the auto industry. If Xi can keep his dick out of the sovereign neighbor beehive (or pulling a Putin, as the kids say), Chinese manufacturers are going to pounce hard on the markets that really matter for big auto.

Nope.  GM made more money this year, a profit of $14.5 billion. They did so by pretty much abandoning the low end of the market.  Ford is in the process of doing the same thing..transforming itself into a maker of 'prime' automobiles.  The low end of the market will...for the time being...be serviced by companies like Kia.

He sounds like a less addled trump.

When a car company starts up: We need to build better cars.
When they just don't give a shiat anymore: We need to improve our cost profile.

tobcc: In August of 2021 I ordered a Ford Maverick thru the website and it was assigned to a local dealer.

They've been doing the same with the Bronco as well

Fissile: DecemberNitro: Make your cars cheaper. There I just increased your buyers by 300% now pay me my consultant's fee of $10M

It's funny too that they're the low end of the market. Kia/Hyundai vehicles have come a long way. They offer one of the best values, and the build quality is quite good. They offer one of the best warranties too.
