The proposed law makes rape de facto legal against poor women of all races and backgrounds, and likely against most minority teens and women, which includes 13 year old girls.

I've tried to warn people for decades that restrictions on abortion would lead to rape victims being placed on trial. It may be because I can't see any of you, but FARK is damned near the ONLY place where I have not been met with eye rolls and derisive comments about paranoia and conspiracy theories.

Essentially, placing rape victims on trial is going to lead to defense lawyers pushing as far as the rules of voir dire will allow to stack juries with anti-abortion absolutists. Rapists are going to walk because Betty Dingbat and her fellow jurists believe a conviction may allow the victim to obtain an abortion.

I'm a bit puzzled by the forensic collections. Most abortions are not D&E/D&C/D&X. There won't be medical waste from a procedure that can be used as forensic evidence to prosecute the rapist. Are they going to be collecting pads used by women in the days following the use of Mifepristone? It is almost like the politicians writing these laws are just farking with women in general and don't have any real knowledge. Oh, right, Tennessee. My mistake.

If we could stop bickering and foolishly insisting that we must remain a whole 50-state nation despite the ideological chasm between us, and discuss the possibility of dissolution like adults in deeply unsatisfying marriage, we could hammer out the details and make it a mostly-painless transition that would benefit both sides immensely.

It's not impossible. I know people like to say it is because it seems like such a chore with so many things that could go wrong, and stubborn, pig-headed people on both sides who want to dig in their heels and say "We're going to compromise and stay together no matter what! Even if it kills us!", but the alternative-- civil war-- is not something we can bear as a nation. If we come to that, we'll probably be invaded by enemies in that moment of chaos and weakness, and we'll not survive as a nation.

We need to divide. We need to go our separate ways. The differences between us are insurmountable, and there's absolutely no reason to keep torturing ourselves with each other's company. The two major ideological groupings in the United States of America have irreconcilable differences. There is no compromise that both sides can live with in most issues today.

It's time to just give up on this 50-state dream and be happy being two 25-state nations that go their own way.

Plus this isn't the Civil War where there was a distinct (or as distinct as possible) geographical split. Idaho and Wyoming aren't going to pair up with Alabama and Mississippi because all four are blood red states, and you'd have to pass through "blue" states and even blue cities to get there. Even tiny enclaves are a pain in the ass for nations to deal with.

Yeah, the idea that Balkanizing America  would help us avoid war instead of making it more likely has got to be one of the more ridiculously naive ideas I've heard so far this morning. I guess they don't know their Balkan history.

I live in PA. If I want to go to Michigan or Illinois, I  would have to go through another "country" to get there. That's how stupid this idea is.

The English lawyer who Alito cited in Dobbs also wrote that a husband couldn't rape his wife. Add to that the idea that all children boren by a woman are considered her husband's would it be impossible to rape a married woman? Unless she was rich, white, and connected.

Sounds to me like women should arm up and shoot first. "He was trying to rape me and I defended myself" is a lot less likely to be prosecuted than "I was raped and need an abortion".
