The only way republicans seem to be able to negotiate is when they take hostages. That is an act of desperation by someone that lacks a good position or anything to trade.

How they govern is frickin' weird and creepy as hell.

Like the DoJ has given anyone of McCarthy's status any reason to be worried about participating in an insurrection

Congress: You will spend $X. The Constitution says Congress gets to decide this
Congress: Taxes/revenue will amount to $Y. The Constitution says Congress gets to decide this
Congress: Oh, and you can only borrow $Z. The Constitution has no opinion on this

What court is going to uphold item #3? It's smart for the Admin to try to obey #3 as best they can, but once that have made a good-faith effort, seems like they should just violate #3 and let Congress cry to the courts.

I think we will really default this time.  The GOP will use the ensuing economic fallout to try and convince voters it was Biden and the Democrats fault.  It will work a little.

Naw. It's going to go up to the line, but as the true deadline approaches, people are going to get more and more annoyed, and the GOP will backdown so long as the Dems don't.

It's dangerously close. The corporate sponsors who donate to the republicans will have an absolute meltdown akin to the financial meltdown their businesses will succumb to. Leaving republicans confused as to how this happened because they truly have no comprehension skills.

One day, we may very well indeed require a final solution to the GOP question to oust these people from government. Particularly if the UN becomes legitimately involved in human rights violations at the behest of China and Russia.

I don't think he's confused. Nothing has changed. He's still empowering conservatives to hold the government hostage.

If we do default, it doesn't really matter what happens after that, as the dumpster fire finding the dynamite kind of ruins everything

"There's nothing in there but me walking away that does not believe at the end of the day we can come to an agreement."

I lost my English-Derpinese dictionary a while back (and Google has a well-known anti-conservative bias so it's not on their list of "approved" languages*), can someone translate?

* although I guess since Derpinese is closely related to English but has slightly different forms and rules (in addition to word substitutions like "nukular" for "nuclear") it's more appropriately a dialect or pidgin

Terribly written headline. MAGA will read it and yell about how McCarthy left dementia riddled Biden confused.

They will have to look up what comprehending means first, but someone will help them Google.

They are pretty psycho. But six months from now, when the stock market tanks, when the ratings agencies start talking about downgrades (or do it, again), and when poll after poll shows Americans overwhelmingly blaming Republicans for it, all before we even default, what then?

It will work a lot.  Most Americans have no idea what any of this is about, but the GOP will be the louder of the two narratives and will drown out the truth with claims that the Dems hate capitalism and working Americans and refused to negotiate common sense spending.  Trying to explain why that's a bunch of horseshiat won't work to people who don't care enough to understand it already.  They'll just hear "Dems did it", and that's easy to believe and consistent with the lies they've been believing for years, despite what their lying eyes have been showing them.

It will only work a lot with the Republican base. The Common Clay of the New West.

The short version is that the D's and the R's are on completely different planets.

In the D's world, it's the responsibility of Congress to determine spending, and how that spending should be paid for (including taxes & borrowing).  And since funding bills start in the House, and McCarthy runs the House, McCarthy needs to take point.

In the R's world, this is a great time to make lots of noise and get lots of attention.  And many R's don't care if the country defaults or not.  So it's up to Biden and McConnell to come up with sufficient bribes to make the House care, otherwise over the fiscal cliff we go.

Right now, the White House should be hammering the media over and over again with the message of Congress is responsible for spending, this is not a negotiation, there is nothing to negotiate.
