"As Common Cause notes in its position paper, 'In 2002, more than half of TV stations in the nation's top 50 markets completely ignored state and congressional elections in their highest rated local news programs in the weeks leading up to those elections, with large station owners offering the least election coverage of all.' McChesney takes it further, saying, 'What little coverage there is, is mostly gossip, spin, and speculation, or basically what's spoon-fed to them by party elites and insiders and big shots accepting all their biases as the appropriate way to view the world. It's impossible to exaggerate just how nutritionless this so-called journalism is.' In other words, viewers of most stations get lots of Donald Trump news, but almost nothing about city council elections or even state representatives."

It's basic "divide and conquer" tactics.  Pick out an already tiny and poorly understood minority, demonize them in the media, and then you've primed the populace to ignore violence against them or even to participate.  Then, you do it again, with a slightly larger and better positioned batch of scapegoats.  First they came for...

I'm not sure they "wonder" about it at all. I wouldn't be surprised if they stop denying it in a few years. They don't seem to have much of a problem being called racists anymore.

I mean you'll still see a little bit of pushback from politicians but the regular folk will do things like call the cops on a 9 year-old black girl who is out collecting bugs...

He is a crook and a liar. They don't care. This is more than just being a hypocrite. This is the equivalent to being an accomplice and co-conspirator in regards to his crimes.
They have learned that I will rip them a new arsehole if they attempt to make excuses for him.
I don't need him and I don't need them.
I'm happy to tell them so, if they ask.

I have ample friends and family members with whom I socialize. I choose not to cast my pearls before swine.

They are willful members of a death cult. They support fascism and racism. They chose economic policies that hurt them and hurt their families. I can be civil, without being friendly.
I could waste my time trying to reason with them, but they cannot be reasoned with.
I could waste my life letting their hate and ignorance consume me. I choose to not enable them or share my resources with them. I support policies and politicians that oppose them.

In my experiences with the conservatives in my life: they genuinely don't understand that they're doing Nazi shiat.

IMO, the biggest problem with Holocaust education in America is that it focuses way too much on the literal facts and figures of the Holocaust, and less on the complex social-psychology as to how a society turns cruel. And that's why you have a bunch of people that can't recognize creeping authoritarianism and genocide until it's too late.

I'm suggesting the damage is being done through politics. Asking for politics to undo the damage in today's America may be the absolute dumbest request you folks have ever made.

The courts and society at large has been the counterbalance. Stop asking for politics to save you. Start asking why it's political at all.

MattytheMouse: In my experiences with the conservatives in my life: they genuinely don't understand that they're doing Nazi shiat.

I agree with the education part - hopefully they make that just as important as the numbers.

But regarding the Nazi label, I think it's more similar to the ACA and Obamacare.

Republicans hate Obamacare because it's socialism. But the people who have insurance for the first time ever they sure do love the ACA. Which is why the GOP quit talking about replacing it on "Day One!"

They're like that with their racism, homophobia, and ButItAin'tLikeMePhobia. They're fine with the letting the hate show through but they still care (for now) what the label is. So yeah, they don't like being called Nazis right now but ask them if they want POC deported and they'll say yes. Ask them if they think trans/gay rights are bullshiat and an abomination and they'll shout "Absolutely!".

Just don't use that N-word...

Possibly. Always been terribly hard to jail the rich and powerful. There's a handful of entities still trying though. No one is arguing that he should be in jail. There's thousands of affluent monsters like that, Trump is far from alone.

Also, what the fark makes you think jail would stop Trump from talking? How exactly does that shut him up? Hell, how does it keep him running for President?

I don't think the argument here is that this is a new thing, it's updated yellow journalism.

The 1996 telecom act was pretext for the bullshiat social media is pulling today (among other things).  The act was written with controlling the future in mind.

I'm pretty sure Fat Stupid Hitler ditched the dogwhistle for a bullhorn as soon as he came down that stupid escalator and went on his rant about how all Hispanics are rapists and killers.

In 2020 he dumped the bullhorn for a train horn. In 2024 if what we're seeing is any indication he will literally go Full Nazi and just get one of those V8 powered air raid sirens.

In all honesty it's worse than that. The GQP began the process of openly embracing racist filth in 2008...

Being trans and Jewish, which means I ought to be up there on the list of people to be killed first, I think people don't recognize why Trump is doing this. He does legitimately fear and hate people not like him, who don't show him deference. He called Jewish Americans killers and disloyal, and that we had better get in line unless we don't mind being targeted by him. He doesn't exactly like Jews, despite some of his grandkids being Jewish, and he can't find a white nationalist who hails him that he doesn't like.

30 percent of HR staff have said that they have had or would have problems hiring Jews from job interviews. And I have dealt with workplace discrimination for that, and that was before I came out.

Anyway, Trump's primary brand is that you vote for him because you hate minorities and you want someone to put them in their place. That's what it was with the birth certificate, that's what it was with the "wall", that's what it was with shiathole countries, that's what it was with the travel ban on Muslims, and that's exactly what it is with trans people having access to health care and legal recognition. He knows his base wants us farking dead. And he is fine with that because it's not his ox getting gored.

Every Trumpist is complicit.
