Are they going to be able to scrape enough paint off the walls to get keep their levels up?

The city can't be saved. It's too far gone.  The only funding that will end the scourge of lead poisoning is money for the nukes Biden must unleash to mercy Philadelphia.  Not murder.  Mercy.  Atomic fusion powered mercy.

Nearly all of the inhabitated houses in Flint that had both lead pipes and people willing to let the government come in and replace them, have had that performed.

Nearly everything that remains are people who refused, or buildings that are uninhabited.

Utilities (water, electricity, heating, and arguably internet lines) should be nationalized, and there should be a massive program to get them up to 21st century standards. The fact that they (and healthcare) were EVER privatized in the first place is a farking disgrace.

Utilities should focus on working properly first, with finances a distant second. There's no room for competition, and thus no room for an actual market.

finances shouldn't even be a thing for the utilities.

True, my bad. The only concern should be getting them to everyone and making sure they work properly.

I really do wonder how much of that money is going to MTG's home district. When the bill was proposed, she claimed to have been "shocked" that there was money for pipes in an infrastructure bill. Pipes can't possibly have anything to do with infrastructure!

I used to manage a small manufacturing facility in Indiana, PA. We were going to do some lead casting of prototypes there and one of the first things you do as part of a proper protocol is to baseline your employees by running blood tests. Every employee we had from Johnstown (and a couple not from there) was lead poisoned. Abandoned the project then, before an ingot ever hit the floor. Those with high lead levels were our problem children, of we had blindly rated employees from 1 to 10 it would have been a map of lead levels. shiat is real.

The main principle behind Reagan's turn to neoliberalism is "profits first." It's also about privatizing EVERYTHING, including the things that shouldn't be privatized. In their (feeble) minds, making utilities profit-driven makes them more competitive and therefore cheaper plus better quality. We all know that's BS, but while Republicans continue to get elected, there's nothing we can do about it.

The fact that lead pipes even still exist in a major city of the US tell you how farked we are with our governing priorities. I can understand people finding out some tiny settlement of 20 people on the top of a mountain or something got missed when they were replaced... but it should be that rare at this point, and there should be a number even those people could call to get it fixed within the month.

It is several dozen orders of magnitude easier to replace the piping for 20 people than it is to replace the piping for a city of 1.5 million people.

I didn't say it wasn't. But we knew the lead pipes were poisonous well over a century ago. There should have been a massive effort to get rid of them, and there's no reason said effort shouldn't be 99.99% complete in 2023.

Lead plumbing wasn't banned in the US until 1986, which is somewhat more recently than a century ago.

Many cities have funding and a program in place to remove lead pipes. They are being quiet about it. Call your water department and request a test kit, if it comes back at a dangerous level you can probably get them replaced at no cost to you.

If the water has a certain mineral content, the lead pipes get coated so the lead doesn't leech into the water.

Plus solder has lead, so even new brass indoor plumbing can still leach lead for a few years until the pipes get coated.

It's about privatizing the profit and publicizing the risk.  And privatizing mostly means raising capital via corporate stocks and bonds which is more expensive than public bonds and saddles utilities and in turn rate payers with a higher level of debt.
