I tried to muster up some snark or cynicism, but I just couldn't. She sounds lovely.

There is a hobby more boring than stamp collecting...

I'm down to like.. 50 original "forever" stamps...
Haven't used one in 10 years.

Assessing stamp collections?

Genuinely curious.

I think I still have some "H rate makeup" stamps from before they went to the forever stamps.

I also bought sheets of 1 and 2 cent stamps at one point to see if you can actually fit enough postage on an envelope using them, while still having enough space to address it ... and I think that was back when they were $0.32 or so

And blah, I never got back my DVD of Going Postal.  But it looks like someone posted part of it to YouTube:

You've never collected stamps, or you would know that there's a lot you can learn from philately.  (cue "Philately will get you nowhere" joke).  Art, history, geography, politics...A stamp album is a gift you can open again and again.

Aw.  The good old days tape trading.  I remember them well.  What I love about the post office is they'll delver pretty much anything so long as there is enough postage attached to it.

I probably average one stamp a month. There are always small businesses that prefer checks, even though some banks have started charging to process them, it's still cheaper than paying fees for CC or other e-payments.

In South Philadelphia born and raised,
At my writing desk was where I spent most of my days,
Just writin' out cursive, and lickin' some stamps,
And mailin' out letters to random uncles and aunts,
When a couple of guys who didnt get letters
Started trouble on behalf of the non-mail getters.
I "cancelled their stamps" but landed in jail,
Now I'll change with the times and use bulk Email.

It's genuinely nice to see this kind of story about Philadelphia make the rounds. As much as I enjoy my city's bonkers FAFO reputation, the overall vibe here really is a lot kinder (note that I am specifically not saying a lot nicer) than people expect.

Shockingly, it wasn't my parents.

/Only off by one county, though.

While you aren't wrong about Philly, this story is about mental illness

That makes sense, a forever yard sign should in front of their forever home

When my grandpa died, he had about a roll and a half of 42 cent non-forever stamps.  (It seems weird that they were still selling denominated 42 cent stamps when forever stamps already existed before postage was raised to 42 cents.)  I've been using them for over a decade.  At first just using two to make up the missing postage.  Then I found a bunch of non-collectable smaller stamps in an envelope and started using them to make exactly the current postage.  I used my last combo of make-up stamps this week.  Still have 20-25 of the 42 cent stamps.

Just noticed postage went up AGAIN last month.  Guess it wasn't worth returning my last two letters for being 3 cents short.

Not far off, they've been in the same house for almost 60 years.  We joke about Mom keeping the local post office in business, but at her age, she can't be bothered to learn Zelmo or Venle or whatever newfangled way of sending money the kids are using.

So an arsehole can repost the same uninformative article a few times for a year or two after the incident, while more arseholes argue about it?

'Another 60 letters for pickup today, Jean? You know the postal service doesn't pay my chiropractor bill, right? You should think about getting an actual job instead of sitting at home all day writing letters. Think of all the trees you're killing. You're accelerating global warming! I suggest you try email. It's much faster, trust me.'

The best thing you can do for the USPS is buy stamps and not use them.
Stamp collecting is the hobby of donating money to the USPS
