(TechSpot)   "Experts" say playing a video game like "Call of Duty" can make you a better driver. So, by the same logic, playing a game like "Grand Theft Auto" will make you a better thief??   (techspot.com) divider line

That's all a bunch of BS. If video games influenced behavior.

Actually, subby, I think the transfer function means that playing GTA can make you a better soldier.

I'd like to see their research data for this. The last time I tried playing Call of Duty while driving, I crashed into a tree.

As far as I can tell the only benefit from 40+ years of video games is that I am spectacular at spotting new products in the grocery store and I'm fantastic at remembering the way back on any path I've recently taken.

Actually, surprisingly useful skills.

Nah. Idea is right but the game ain't.

This taught me how to drive in those spots in LA where driveways are tiny and have no perception, the streets are narrow, idiots often dart out without a care and crazy shiat happens.

/seen brawls, naked runners, wrecks and police car chases on one of my commute street options that reminds me of this game -- and that's not even in the barrio section of the avenue as it goes from there to the beach cities. Unfortunately some damn good restaurants along that street too

When I was learning how to drive, GTA III helped a bit with turning left to go right and right to go left when backing in and out of places.  That really fogged my brain for some reason but a 3rd person view and thumbsticks made it feel less counterintuitive somehow.

Sometimes after a lengthy GTA session I would have to go out and drive a car in the real world, and I would catch myself thinking that I could totally fit down that sidewalk. Never did it, though.

No it doesn't. Even assuming some of the ammo is weightless, being like doom guy would see one weighed down by and tangled in so many guns to move. Now add bullets and it might even crush the would be space marine.

Just to be clear for the sarcasm-blind, the title of the linked article is "A brief history of blaming video games for mass murder", so yes - I agree, it doesn't.

Call of Duty tho? Maybe.

I can see how Call of Duty would be a better game for training alertness, improving response times and hand-eye coordination.

However, Call of Duty isn't going to prepare anyone for how a car handles.  Also, true racing simulators aren't exactly easy.  There's a reason players of racing sims spend thousands of dollars on their gaming setups.

At some point you are going to land. The important part is surviving it.

The secret to landing a small plane without any training, experience, or guidance is to find a long flat surface you can approach into the wind.  You can come down close to stall speed  and crash fairly gently if you must.

Rough terrain or strong crosswind is going to make life tougher.  And if you can't find a good road, look for a large farm field.  Wheat over corn if possible.

If there is one thing GTA has taught me, it's that game devs do not know what a sway bar is, nor why it is an important part of the suspension on many vehicles.

Also, that nobody bothers rolling down a window because bashing them with a pistol is easier.
