I know a lot about Amazon because my neighbor was a manager at that very warehouse. He had years of experience in the warehouse business before joining that company. But his stories...

He retired for good just before this happened and he is very happily retired.

Six workers were killed in December 2021 at an Amazon warehouse in Illinois after a tornado ripped through the building.

Bet they were also automatically fired beforehand because their software determined their individual productivity had flatlined.

It would not be fair to target Amazon only.  All warehouses in a given area should have appropriate storm shelters.

And if you read the article, this building actually did have a safe room, just, some workers might not have realized it and tried to shelter in the bathroom instead.  Building a saferoom is important, but marking it and educating all the users of the building about which room it is is also important.

TFA indicates that the families of some of the deceased are suing. I am not a lawyer, but:

If Amazon now built a shelter, would that be ammunition that could be used against them in that case, as an admission that their facilities were previously inadequate?

The working class mostly doesn't see why they should have to care, after all, politics is boring.

"Amazon requires that its buildings follow all applicable laws and building codes," Brian Huseman, Amazon's vice president of public policy, wrote on Jan. 14 in responses to an inquiry from three Democratic lawmakers.
"We have not identified any jurisdiction in the United States that requires storm shelters or safe rooms for these types of facilities."

Oh, so some lawmakers asked a simple question about why Amazon specifically doesn't build things into their facilities that aren't required by law? Seems like a pleasant enough exchange.

Oh, no. Never mind. This is AOC and Elizabeth Warren we're talking about - can't just ask a question, you have to use accusatory rhetoric, referring to a company that followed all of the rules and had the bad luck to be hit by a major tornado as having "apparent unwillingness to invest in a storm shelter."

I guess at least they sent a letter instead of a mean tweet. That must have been Warren's personal touch.

Per TFA, it looks like the tornado actually formed up in the parking lot. Some folks might not have had time to get to the designated area and made the next best choice.

I gotta side with Amazon on this part, though--they built their building to the specs that were required of them.  Not gonna hash on them about that.

There are three types of Amazonians: the ones who have drank the Kool-Aid, the ones who see and tolerate a lot of bullshiat for the paycheck, and the delusional very few who think they can improve the culture.

The shelter standards could be improved rapidly with pressure from the insurance companies. Higher rates for shiatty non compliance, or non coverage if standards are not met.

So not only do you monetarily show support by buying something from Amazon, you further support them by trumpeting their low prices on social media. This, whilst feigning disgust with their business practices.

*sigh*

Wonder how much the insurance coverage for the building or property or product was, maybe even not required in the specs, as opposed to building a basement as insurance for some folks lives?  I'm sure they ponied up for that.

I have no idea how old you may be, but growing up watching Sesame Street with my younger brother there used to be a short skit with a shady character, black coat & hat, on a corner waiting for anyone to walk by, and he says "pssst, hey buddy wanna buy an X?", opens his coat to one side where an X is positioned.

The only other person on the planet I know who remembers this skit is my exhusband. When we were dating, he was waiting for me for us to meet up together and as I got closer he said "pssst, hey you, wanna buy an X?" and opened his jacket to show me the X adhered inside.

I would give almost anything if he had remained that guy. That's the guy I fell head over heels for, for being light and fun and witty and compassionate and loving. Sadly that man disappeared less than 5 years after we were married.

I'd love to know if anyone else remembers that Sesame Street skit though, so feel free to speak up anyone 🙂

Somehow I got nominated to be the data guy for our legal department.

It's only helpful that I get to put ### vs (my company) on our task board since I can't disclose the details to my uninitiated boss and co-workers.

I'll assume it chaps their asses that I am permitted secrets by the company. Mostly it's boring as fark. Sometimes super fun to navigate our data position.

I really could care less whose warehouse it was.
Folks died while working, and we have a bunch of mechanisms, including fire codes, building codes, and Osha codes, that could be updated to prevent that from recurring.
Those mechanisms would apply equally to everyone.  You know, like all codes and laws should.
I agree that Amazon has some bad tendencies and some of their business practices should be illegal.
But let's remember how the law works.  If you pass a new law, everyone has to obey it.  Not just Jeff Bezos.

Neil Gorsuch ruled that workers need to die for the company. It has already been shown that companies can dictate what you can and can not do outside of work. Some test workers for nicotine. OSHA has been a joke for a very long time.

Conservatives hate "job killing regulations" or as we see it "life saving regulations".
