Surprised he didn't threaten to nuke them again.  That always goes over well.

Acute mountain sickness?   Like altitude sickness?   Seems he would have been aware that he wasn't/shouldn't be driving.  Fuji, if he and his family did hike to the top (is that a thing?), is only around 12,000 ft.

What is it, like 5% of all machines in America are Japanese? Never mind that Honda cars are some of the most American manufactured cars you can buy, last time I checked

But sure. Flex your limp dick energy for the world to see. Don't commit crimes outside of the US. Sure, I'd rather serve jail time in any other first world country but get tried? USA all the way.

Republicans won't be happy until they burn all our alliances to the ground.

Real smart trying to alienate our strongest ally in the Asia-Pacific region (save South Korea) for the sake of some asshole who fell asleep at the wheel.

Obviously Mike Lee meant China.

2023-02-02 12:40:00 PM
The PM went on to laugh hysterically, because Mike Lee can't do shiat about it but issue stupid threats on twitter.

Fark this guy. And, generally, Americans need to get off the idea that our nationality means we aren't accountable for offenses committed in other countries. Sounds like the dude got his trial and lost. End conversation. His "defense", such as it was, wouldn't have held much water here and clearly didn't hold much in Japan.

2023-02-02 12:40:53 PM
Does he believe we have military bases there just to benefit the Japanese rather than a strategic presence?

2023-02-02 12:41:05 PM
Other countries need to realize that Americans are allowed to kill without any consequence.

I wonder why a Republican is so up in arms about this when last year we were told another American should rot for being so dumb as to break another country's law.

Ah, now I get it.

The dumb motherfarker should have thrown himself at the mercy of the court. Maybe mention how he dishonored his fellow shipmates, the US Navy, and his nation by his reckless behavior that cost the lives of two innocents.

Instead he and his family went all derp.

To turn this idea around, does that mean all Mexican nationals serving time in US prisons for drug charges should be released? Heck, that doesn't even work. Truckers get sent to jail all the time when they fall asleep and kill people.

2023-02-02 12:57:05 PM
The dude killed two people after he fell asleep at the wheel. What the f*ck.

Also, there really ought to be consequences for a member of Congress openly threatening to extort a country this way.

Man I cringed at how tone deaf that was. You cut out the parent where defense advised them that no one who has paid that level of restitution has gone to prison. Way to blow through any perceived intent you were attempting to cultivate. So really, any sympathy for the grieving family, and any interest in making with them, is really self-serving interests in disguise.

I don't know about the whole family but this person here is a psychopath

Once upon a time I served in the US Navy. During my first time outside this country the idea and the reality was impressed upon me that the ship I was on would be stopping in the ports of nations that are not the United States. While my feet were on the dirt of those nations would be subject to not only their customs but their laws.

All of them.

That meant if I farked up and got arrested the captain of my ship would ask that I be returned. If the local authorities said no that was the end of it and I had to deal with whatever the penalty was for violating their laws. Our constitution does not matter to these people, and I have no rights under it while not on US dirt.  After that I would be subject to even more punishment when I was returned to the US through the UCMJ.

Everyone that has gone or served overseas with the military has been told this, either formally or informally. I have no sympathy for anyone - especially an officer - that chooses to disregard these warning, and this senator is a dumbass for suggesting that people who choose to serve in our armed forces should somehow be exempt from the law and its consequences wherever they are.

You come in my house, you follow my rules.

No, i'm sure the real story is the GOP is neck deep in china money since 'projection' is literally 100% of their game, and China wants to fling some shiat at Japan cause reasons.

The guy killed someone in a car accident. It's not like the dude was buying some ice cream and arrested for espionage or some other whacky scenario. Best case the US has on this is if they can prove other people get off with far less consequences in Japan.

Yeah, that's pretty sketchy. And it's a whopping 3 year sentence. Listening to Lee, you'd think he was on death row.

Hey Japan, Ireland let Mathew Broderick kill people while driving why can't you let off a serviceman?

That's the entire argument?

Ok, then. See you in a few years, Sailor dude.

Let's see here...

It's been said that after Putin won the conflict in Ukraine, his next move was to invade Japan in order to take back the Kuril Islands they've been disputing for decades.

The GOP is essentially bankrolled by Russia by way of laundered NRA money.

So why would an FSB Operative rando Republican from Utah neon trying to harm Japan-US Relations?

Yes, it's a thing. A miserable thing. "A wise man climbs Fuji once. Only a fool climbs it twice."

My wife got pretty sick on the climb. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altitude_sickness says "acute mountain sickness" is definitely a thing and can start around 6,600 ft, or halfway up Fuji.

Subject to the laws of Japan while in Japan. congressman Lee has no power in Japan. He can pound sand. Two killed.

Anoxia impairs decision making.  AMS risk *generally* sets in around 8000-9000ft of elevation, but some people get it at lower altitudes.  also once you have it it takes time to clear.

I made the mistake of driving from seattle to salt lake city in one day, then hiking at 11,000 ft with the husband of a friend.  i got AMS despite being literally search and rescue, used to mountain hiking.

i fell asleep on the drive down the mountain, i was the passenger though so it was fine.

Moran was probably driving on the right while cursing all those people at the top for not speaking English. Three months seems pretty light for killing people due to negligence.

I was stationed in Germany for 2 1/2 years and I had more than my fill of Americans behaving badly while abroad. The armed services are eat up with young men and women (mostly the men, however) that think they are entitled to their American sensibilities while in host countries. Go to a Volksfest in any city in Germany with a military base nearby and you can spot Americans a mile away and not because of the haircut. Loud, obnoxious, arrogant and as soon as the beer starts flowing unprovoked aggression. I would love to go there again and experience it as a normal tourist.

Did she drive back home afterwards?

Sorry to hear about your wife.   I guess it can happen.  We regularly send time at 6000 plus feet in eastern Oregon.  We live at sea level and never have a had a problem***.   Also, the sailor is from Utah, which has a mean elevation of 6100 feet.

Also, the real reason Lee is having a cow about this particular person is that he is a fellow Mormon with his Utah family raising a ruckus about it.

***In fact, I noticed that my vision improved there.  My husband said maybe there was less pressure on my astigmatism.  Who knows, but it was remarkable.

They brought out the ol "it doesn't happen to anyone else" defense RE: the jail time.  Like, don't you think a prosecutor in the US would make an example of a foreign national for a reckless homicide or manslaughter?  It's good optics and hopefully serves as a warning to lay off the dumb shiat while abroad.

2023-02-02 1:25:21 PM
It's important to remember that the US has enough money to have a base in Japan where we station military and their families. These bases are like US cities with American stores, gas stations, restaurants, movie theaters, primary and high schools, colleges, child care centers, recreation centers, officer/NCO clubs, etc.

When you wonder where your tax dollars are going when you see a military spending bill, it goes for things like this.

As to this guy, he obviously screwed up enough that the US Military didn't see fit to extract him on the first plane out of Japan like they did with the woman that killed someone but was married to the State Dept guy in the UK.

I've definitely heard a lot of horror stories about the Japanese justice system, especially for foreigners, but this isn't one of those cases.
