Coral Island is in Early Access but I recommend giving it a whirl. (Cheapest way is to get Xbox Game Pass).

Steam had Fallout 4 for only six fitty last week, so I thought I'd give it a try.

Yeah, they nerfed the RPG elements, but not nearly as much as I was lead to believe. The action has been improved. I'm using side quests for now to level up an Infiltrator build. Overall, not as good as Fallout 3/New Vegas, but worth my time. I'll play this to completion.

I'd give the game extra points if they allowed your character to tell Preston Garvey, "how about you do it your own GOT damn self!"

GTAV:Online HAS BEEN PATCHED FOR PC!!!!

https://www.reddit.com/r/gtaonline/comments/10qw56d/pc_patch_released_today_to_hopefully_address_the/

10 agonizing days I had to live without it so as to not risk hackers revoking all my money, vehicles, properties, and achievements... or possibly even worse. So I will no doubt go nuts playing that this weekend.

In the meantime, I reckon I'm more than halfway through Cyberpunk 2077, and I am incredibly glad I gave it a second chance after upgrading my graphics card to an Asus 3060ti.

The storyline of Cyberpunk 2077  is just twist after twist after twist and I am absolutely loving it. Modding it with RedMod worked fine, but it's actually super easy to install Nexus mods without RedMod. I don't have that many going and the R19 graphic mod I had completely f*cked the up the desert missions because the screen washes out almost completely white.

I'm a little miffed at Panam in that she seemed to indicate we were gonna f*ck and that has yet to happen. Yes, I focus on the important parts of the story.

As for the question of the week - all of my interactions with Early Access have not been positive. The games I bought were playable, but they had some very serious bugs like falling through the map at random. In addition, updates to games that I bought were either incredibly slow or non-existent.

I have sworn off buying Early Access games because of the bad apples I have encountered. Either sell me a working game, or don't sell me anything at all. Cashing in on a game that is 70% finished is a sh*tty model.

For mobile, I tried Genshin Impact, played for 20 minutes, and haven't picked it up again.  Not sure I will, but we'll see.

On PC, I was scrolling thru my steam list and realized I had a short game called Hitman Sniper Challenge, so I played that.  It was a demo round released to prepare for Hitman Absolution, which I also happen to own, so I loaded that up and played the first level.  I'll probably play that one a bit more when I get the time, but it's not one I can play with the young one running around the house.

I have no idea where I picked up the Hitman games, but apparently, I got quite a few of them at some point.

Indy games I recommend:

On mobile, my favorite game was one called A Dark Room.  It was a browser text-adventure game ported to android and IOS, and it is absolutely stellar.  I have yet to find one I like playing more, and my only complaint is how short it is.

On PC, one of my favorite indie games is Antichamber.  It's essentially a labyrinth puzzle game designed by the re-incarnation of M.C. Escher.  $20 might be a little steep for the length of it, but if you ever see it on sale, it's absolutely worth picking up for $5-$10.

So, this week's gaming is still slogging thru that VN I started. Sadly, some actually business things and derby things kept me from playing more than I have. Also, I got a call from GS that my pre-order for Raiden IV x MIKADO came in for the PS4 AND PS5. OK, I guess someone didn't check that I was accidently making a 2nd reservation for it or they just wanted another pre-order to meet their daily goal? I'll figure out which one I'll buy when I go by on Saturday.

Meanwhile, I have this to put together so I can hopefully see that "one in 50,000 years" comet either tonight or tomorrow:

Been playing Ixion, and wow it's good. It's a "city-builder", but you're doing it in space, with an ongoing story and a very small area you can work in- until you open up new sections of the space station you're on.

To call it challenging would be to sell it short. It's maddening, and actually far slower-paced than most games I usually like to play, but man is it engaging.

CSB: Over the past several months I've started to realize that my job is basically and IRL management game (Warehouse Lead/Procurement/Shipping/Receiving/Forklift/+10 bajillion other things I do that I'll never get paid extra for, but oh well). Anywho some days I like to listen to the Stardew Valley OST as I work (I wear a DS4 earbud all day anyway listening to music, listening for Teams and email alerts from various other warehouses because apparently I work for them too even though they are supposed to have their own version of me at their respective locations but those people are apparently inept so it falls on me I guess). Wait.. I'm trailing off biatching about work a bit so I'll get back to it... We go through a lot of remote employees, many who only work for a few weeks before they quit, some who never even start, but every one gets either a laptop or desktop setup delivered to our warehouse for me to distribute. If there is ever a problem with their machine you have to submit an IT help ticket, which can take weeks for a response. Or you can submit a ticket for a new setup, which will get delivered within a few days. Needless to say, almost everyone opts for a new setup. So as you can imagine, we have a lot of old to not-so-old computers and laptops which end up getting tossed in an empty office to sit there in perpetuity. Last week I was depositing a cartfull into the office when one of the piles of tech fell over revealing an older HP laptop. This stuck out to me because we only use Chromebook laptops. This was a HP Pavilion G6. It didn't have a company sticker on it and it had clearly been there for a long time so I asked my manager if I could have it and they said sure as long as I wiped it. Took it home, battery is dead and won't charge but it works as long as it stays plugged in. It was running suuuuuuuuper slow (still had Win 7 on it) so I fresh installed Win 10, installed Stardew Valley, crossed my fingers hoping it would work and it did! Framerate stutters a little sometimes but works good enough. Also added a few emulators and a bunch of roms and everything works. So now I can Stardew and retro game on my lunch breaks, and all is right in the world.

The Coin Game

It's the best deal I've found to date in an Early Access game. What began as a modestly priced simulation of several ticket redemption games has been gradually becoming more of an open world funfair as the sole developer continues to add one update after another.

I was happy with what was there for the price when I bought it. Since then the game has trebled in size with added features and locations with a promise of more to come that so far has been fulfilled.

FINALLY farking beat Elden Ring on PS5 and platinumed it. Save scummed for all the endings since I went through the trouble of setting myself up for all 6 possible endings and no way in hell was I doing 2 more playthroughs. Felt absolutely nothing when I finally beat the Elden Beast because by that time it just felt like mostly luck and then all the endings are like 1 minute clips of dialogue that slightly changes against a different background. Lackluster ending to an otherwise fantastic game until the end.

Got to start Guardians of the Galaxy and that game has been fun as hell so far.

Been playing a little bit of MW2 in the mornings, and then a mishmash of other things.  Persona 3 Portable, Demon's Tilt, a few others.

Indie/early access games I'd recommend:  Try 20XX/30XX.  The music is great, and it hits the Mega Man X vibe and controls.

Ehhh, like Cyberpunk 2077, after 6 months of patches, it will be a perfectly acceptable game...on clearance for $20.

By all accounts, its problem is much more fundamental than Cyberpunk's though:  I haven't played it myself, but from what I've heard from reviewers there's nothing to do out in the big open world except combat, and your agility and ranged focus is such that the combat is boring.  You're so much faster and your attack range is so good that enemies can't really do anything to you unless you're fighting a big group and one hits you from offscreen.  Couple that with an open world that doesn't really do anything new/different, and the game that was built up as "the new generation of gaming", with a price point to match, is left as a retread of the same stuff we've all seen a million times.  A few patches won't fix that.

It's a shame, because the opening and early game actually suggested a lot of potential.  Not everyone likes the protagonist, occasionally even for valid reasons, but Mortismal, a reviewer who actually spent some time homeless as a teenager, said they flat-out nailed the experience.  Apparently things really pick up in the late-game too.  It's just everything in between that falls flat, and in an open-world title, that's a pretty major problem.  It's one of those games might have benefited from being more linear.

Decided this week to re-download Warhammer 40,000 Inquisitor: Martyr: Reloaded: Special Victims Unit (I know the title is not that damn long, I like the game but the title is yikes) that I took out of my PS4 to make room for Gran Turismo 7 and a couple other things, this time playing the Psyker. Not as fun as the Tech Adept, which is pretty much Diablo 2's Necromancer, but still fun due to the sheer randomness of the warp.

Well, except for the one time the Warp randomly summoned a farking Imperial Guard Sentinel that wrecked my shiat as a squishy level 10 Psyker in a map that had NO COVER, it was a mission that required I take out all enemies on the map, and the Sentinel counted towards that objective. I want to see how far I can take this before I move on to the Assassin class, which I don't think I played. Then maybe commit to finishing a Warp Crusade, which I've also never done.

In sporting news, my NHL 22 Create-a-Pro is lighting up his rookie season - it's been 22 games, and he's looking good for the Calder Cup and he's on a hot point streak. Not enough to save the Buffalo Sabres, who are 18th in the NHL (did not check how we're doing in the division), but I can't make our keeper not gargle donkey balls; I'm not responsible for what happens on the ice when my guy isn't on his shift.

I am still in my Battletech mood and playing the BEX mod version of the turn based game (on steam). I need to get back to the Mechwarrior 5 (on PS5) with the new DLC, which is my current favorite simulation game.

As for indie recommendations, I have to say Battle Brothers (on Steam) with all the major DLC (not the cosmetics). If you like turned based tactical strategies, this may be our thing. I played it since it was early access and it has just been getting better over the years. It even has a light modding community if you need that.

GotG is great.  The gameplay isn't going to reinvent the wheel for you or anything, it's kinda Mass-Effect-ey but with more movement, but the story and characters are very well done, and it doesn't outstay its welcome.

Midnight Suns is also really good, but in kind of the opposite direction.  The core plot is decent enough, but nothing to write home about.  The characters and writing are "divisive", I didn't think they were as bad as some people did, but they were definitely hit-or-miss.  The voice direction is straight-up bad, though a few people managed to turn in a decent performance anyway (Lowenthal and Bailey spring to mind).  The actual COMBAT, though?  That's fantastic.  Tight as hell deckbuilder mechanics, really good move variety, environmental interactions and other things that place an emphasis on positioning...  Even people who don't normally like deckbuilder mechanics admit that it was way more engrossing than they expected.  I also thought exploring the base area and solving puzzles was really fun, but the gameplay rewards for doing so generally aren't anything special.  Definitely get this one if it gets a decent sale, but maybe not for the full $60.

I played a few chapters of the Guardians game. If I remember right, it is the same idea as Avengers, but executed about 1000x better. There's a lot of cutscenes and a lot of dialogue, and you control a team of heroes. During puzzles, you can swap between characters to use their abilities to solve the puzzles. During combat, the other characters are more like power-ups or special moves.

Not a ton of video games this week.

I started a fun little casual game called Stumble Guys.  Its a neat little obstacle course game, kind of like American Gladiators with lego men.  Rounds are only around 5 minutes, so its a good one when you don't have tons of time.  Free To Play and worth a look.

Also had a few really good rounds in CS:Go.  It's fun top fragging on kids half my age.  If they get uppity, you can mention you are older than their dad.  Hell you probably ARE their real dad.
