That's because of a dramatic cost of living increase in Social Security, which went into effect last month.

Because inflation jumped 8.7%, SS matched it. You're just as poor as you've always been, but now SNAP says you're too rich.

Growing up poor, making it to middle class, still having lots of poor friends, I've seen quite a number of people irl who used gov't assistance like snap, and I don't know of one person that doesn't desperately need it and still struggles despite having it. I'll never understand the myth about the "widespread fraud" that occurs or the narrative that every person on snap is just lazy and doesn't want to work or something. I'm sure there is fraud, that's just the world we live in. But I'd bet for like every 1000 people that use it there is like 1 case of fraud. It's like the mentality is, because someone might abuse it, or someone may have abused it in the past, we now need to punish all poor people. But I digress. As I write this I really there is no point in ranting, the world is just an ugly f'd up place for anyone not in the top 10% of income brackets. Humans suck. And I think they HAVE TO KNOW that the more they squeeze poor and middle-class workers (and they ARE squeezing - by raising the interest rates on us all (rather than taking money from billionaires)) they are causing more financial damage to the average Dick and Jane.  So they are preparing for the inevitable backlash.  If Americans can actually do that anymore.  But just in case they're gonna need more police --  er, security forces.

Warren Calls For 'Landing the Plane Not Crashing It' After Fed Hikes Rate Despite Cooling Inflation (commondreams.org) (Feb 01, 2023)

"With today's rate hike, the Fed is pushing us dangerously close to an unnecessary recession that would spell disaster for low-wage workers, workers of color, and vulnerable communities," the Groundwork Collaborative declared. "Workers and families shouldn't have to pay the price for inflation."..

...U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a major critic of the wave of increases, tweeted that "we want to bring down inflation, but that means landing the plane not crashing it. Chair Powell should pause his interest rate hikes and remember his dual mandate: Fight inflation without throwing millions out of work.

Patrolling in squad car separates the cop from the populace, and makes recognition of shared humanity much much harder.

But this is also a part of our impersonal car dependent culture that is turning our lives into a PvE experience with NPCs instead of the PvP it should be.

Gotta keep the world engine turning.  The peasants got used to food.  Now take it away and the peasants will have to turn the world engine faster so they can get the food they are used to.  Then slowly raise the price of food so the underchuds are desperate, and repete the cycle.
