It's not like they can just put a bigger seat belt on the ride and call it a day. There's a lot of engineering involved in making the same ride work ergonomically and safely for a 90# rider and for a 350# rider.

While I do think that it's tone-deaf of Universal not to consider people of larger size when it comes to attractions like these, I don't see it as something worthy of getting one's jimmies rustled.

As someone who's gone to both Disney World and Universal Florida in the same vacation, I can verify this. I was just over 300 last time we went and Disney was pretty much no problem. A few of the rides were tight squeezes but I could get on everything. Universal had many i couldn't ride. Guessing it's because Universal is more extreme, thrill ride type than Disney is.

I was at both last September, and can defintely agree. 6'2", 275. The only ride I had an issue with in Disneyworld is Space Mountain, and I could still ride it.

Fully 50% of the larger rides at Universal were impossible, and it wasn't close. A couple of others (particularly Gringott's and Velocicoaster) I could ride, but but my voice went up an octave thanks to the tight fit.

I don't think the "thrill" rides level is the difference (Rockin Roller Coaster in Disneyworld was no problem). Universal just won't pay the extra money to engineer for more people to ride the rides.

I think it's more the mechanism the ride uses for securing the rider.  I've noticed a lot of newer thrill rides have gone away from the shoulder harness system in favor of a lap constraint.  Seeing as a lot of people's extra weight is distributed around their midsection, the lap constraint would be much more of an issue.

I remember this became sort of newsworthy way back when the initial Harry Potter rides opened up years ago.  From the article, it sounds like Universal's 40 inch "limit" is in line with what they've used in those rides in the past, so if you were good with those you should probably be good with this one.  I will say, the lap constraints definitely make the ride a bit more intense, specifically in the case of the Velocicoaster.  It really makes you feel like you're floating out of your seat at times.  You'd get that with the shoulder harness system a little as well, but then you'd feel the pressure on your shoulders, kind of reaffirming your feeling of safety.

This is a really apt callback. For better or for worse, this isn't the first, or even second or third time Universal Studios has put this exact limit on riders. Does it suck for the people above 40" waist? Yes. Is it unexpected? Not unless you weren't aware that this is the precedent for any ride that requires restraints.

Somacandra: You can't ride basically anything there if you're fat.

I was at the County fair a few years ago when security, backed by some uniformed police, escorted a family out the gate. Kid wanted to ride the Farris wheel. He and dad exceeded the 500 lb limit (Big sign and scales). Mom and kid were under 500lbs, but mom was having none of it. Kid was too young to ride by himself (<14 yo). Dad was screaming at the carnie, who called in backup. Dad was going to sue the carnie, police, security, country, fair grounds, etc. as they headed for the gate.

Did you know Disney rebuilt It's a Small World because the boats were hanging up due to people's weight?

2023-02-02 1:46:18 PM
As long as there's a test seat you can try before you get in line.

There are a bunch of rides I can't fit on - I'm too tall for most of the underhang with shoulder-straps style roller coasters, my knees don't always fit under the seat in front of me, and I'm too round for some types of ride restraint.  When I was at Busch Gardens I appreciated that they had test seats out in front of where the line started, so I could actually check if I was going to fit prior to committing to the wait.

It's no fun to stand in line for upwards of 40 minutes just to find out the ride is too small for you.
