Well all the fees will go away and be replaced by the the junk fee prevention act fee.

I was signing mortgage papers and casually commented that the bank probably broke even on the mortgage itself and their profit was all in the fees and service charges.  The banker slyly smiled.

pay an extra $50 to sit next to your child on the plane

airline split us up one time on a family vacation; moving my partner and our daughter to first class while I remained in coach with the boy.  But they also sat the two of us apart from each other in coach and the kid was like, idk, 6 or 7 at the time.  I asked around if anyone would switch so we could sit together but nobody would so he was plopped into the middle seat with a business guy on the aisle who wanted to yakkity yak yak yak with his other suited business partner sitting in the same row across the aisle.

about 40 min into the flight, business guy finds me about ten rows behind them and asks to switch.   Kid had ordered a coke and spilled it on him, so they got him another with the same result.

Two thoughts hiat me almost at the same moment:

"dumbasses, what did you expect when you leave a kid without his caregiver"

and

"THAT'S MY BOY!!!"

My most hated is the internet service ads. "Only $89.99 / mo for two years" turns out to be $133/mo after all the fees, taxes, and other cost add-ons. Why isn't shiat like that already illegal?

Good start.

Howzabout we enhance it into a "The Price You See is the Price You Pay Act", requiring that any signage or advertisement displaying the consumer cost of a good or service displays the TOTAL price including any taxes, fees, etc - the civil penalty for false advertising being not only that the good or service be sold to any deceived consumer for the listed price, but a rebate equivalent to the "hidden" cost (plus criminal penalties for repeat offenders). I'm not a lawyer, but I'd also build in a "no class action settlements" clause, so if a company was found to be deceiving consumers for years, you've gotta track people down and pay them (credit card records make that easy), not make some shiatty "we stole $400 from you, here's a $5 coupon" settlement.

If you list it for "$99*" but that asterisk adds taxes and fees so it's actually $133.87, you've now awarded any customer who bought it $34.87 ON TOP OF refunding them $34.87 for deception. Congrats, your $99 product now sells for $64.13, and I bet the bean counters LOVE you.

Basics of capitalism; it rewards capital, not labor.
Owning a lot of money means people who need money have to give you extra money to use their money. And they set the rules where if they don't get all the money, they get what you have given them already, plus the thing you want that is worth 100% of the money you initially needed.

Which they then lease/rent out for more money than it costs to steal it from the first guy.

Welcome to late-stage capitalism.

I worked at a university, about 4000 students, and was involved the student data systems.  I began to notice a lot of fees and charges for parking tickets, broken locks, lost library books and other irresponsible acts.  I ran a report and the total charges for the previous semester was almost $250,000, with some individuals charged up to $1000.  I mentioned this the head of student billing and she said, they don't care, the charges are taken care of by their scholarships and financial aid.  Grooming indeed.

If you just think of those things that end up on all of your bills as "charges for things we didn't do and don't cost us a penny" you will feel worse about the whole thing.  Just terrible.  But, you know... you need communications services and heat and electricity and media access, so, just be mad.

Eh it'd be nice but I give places a pass on sales tax when they're making an ad that's shown across the state or country. I'm fine hyper focusing on the made up fees so they can pretend they have the lowest price just to get you there.

I work on a lot of loans where there's just no way they're making a profit on it just based on what they're paying me. The fees are to make up for those instances.

How do you legally define a junk fee?  Yes, junk fees are rampant, but the gotcha = how are they identified?
Once the law passes, a bunch of MBA weasels build spreadsheets & PPT decks  on how to slightly alter the fees to skirt the definition.  It's whack-a-mole.

That's not true at all.  When a house is sold as a foreclosure, the proceeds go towards the balance of the debt.  They don't just simply seize your equity.

It's the way banks have worked since Og loaned his neighbors a quarter of a mammoth with the expectation he'd get a half a mammoth back after the next hunt.

Pay depositors 3%, write mortgages for 6%, be on the golf course by 3.

You keep any money left over from the auction after the debt is paid.

Although it's pretty stupid to reach that point if you actually have enough equity in the house.  You could have ended up with more by just selling.

When I went to Vegas in 2018 for a conference, it had been ten years... no more cheap hotels, no more free parking on the strip (R.I.P. Frontier, Ho, and Stardust), and the hotels charged for everything ($15/night parking? WTF?). The 1%ers are trying to turn Vegas into a place where the poors will be relegated to motels blocks from the strip (and even downtown). Honestly, they get better service (and house odds) from their local Indian casinos.

It's not hard to look up the local tax rates where an ad gets placed. It might take an intern several hours, even a whole day if it's a big campaign, but tax information is freely and publicly available. It also probably gets easier as you go along, since you'd already have that info from earlier campaigns.

For big enough companies and widespread enough ad campaigns, they already have different prices for different regions (think fast food ads) - this might fracture it a bit more, but it's not like it's unheard of to run ads with different text in different areas.

It shouldn't be up to consumers to read 3 paragraphs of 2-point font to suss out that you're doubling the cost of your product with this bullshiat. It's deceptive and predatory - this just shifts the burden of "figuring out the final price" back to the companies selling the product. And as they're the ones selling it, they should be able to come up with that information way more quickly and easily. (They could also not list a price in ads at all; rely on selling the sizzle, not the "savings".)

// they already have to contract with "billboard hangers local 302" (or whomever) to get those ads up, why not give them the extra 30 seconds of work to punch a few numbers into a calculator?
// and if we're talking internet ads, Google already knows your physical location (to the nearest cell tower) and it'd be even easier (several orders of magnitude shorter) to run the math
// it does mean they (probably) can't hard-code numbers into the ads anymore - but I think we can weather that loss with a minimum of tears and clothes-rending
