The limitations of teaching intersectionality are particularly offensive to me.

One can suffer more than just one sort of discrimination at the same time. Gay white kids have a particular journey, gay black youth on the other hand have another entirely. Coming out for older Black men or women have a whole 'nother flavor. The interactions between these sorts of discrimination and sometimes privilege create unique paths, and are the result of layers of issues, and illustrate where the United States can improve to deliver on promises of equality under the law, as well as social fairness. Which are, to those who enjoy the power of privilege, obviously going to reduce their own standing and privilege. I mean, they might have to compete with those people.

De Santis and others who oppose educating others on the history and context of discrimination, as well as their systemic roots are all about protecting their own privilege, and they're willing to set fire to all the history books in order to keep it. Or rather, they're willing to use the most pig ignorant excuses to guarantee that they can fleece as many rubes who fear their privilege being lost, because they KNOW even the poorest, most destitute white man would hesitate to change places with Shaq or Robert L Johnson.

Won't do any good. The racists intend to continue whittling away at black identity forever as they have done forever.

Heh or Kevin Hart.   You get to be rich, clever, strong and successful  BUT you have to be both a short and Black man.

DeSantis would do well to actually read Baldwin. I only discovered his work in the last year, and it had a profound effect on me. He might be the most brilliant writer I've ever read. And unless we keep pushing back against Republicans on their blatantly racist bullshiat, the end of Baldwin's "The Fire Next Time" excerpt, Down at the Cross is inevitable.

And here we are, at the center of the arc, trapped at the gaudiest, most valuable, and most improbable water wheel the world has ever seen. Everything now, we must assume, is in our hands. We have no right to assume otherwise. If we, and now I mean the relatively conscious Whites and the relatively conscious Blacks, who must, like lovers, insist on or create the consciousness of the others, do not falter in our duty now, we may be able, handful that we are, to end the racial nightmare, and achieve our Country, and change the history of the world.

If we do not now dare everything, the fulfillment of that prophecy recreated from the Bible in a song by a slave is upon us: God gave Noah the rainbow sign; no more water, the fire next time.

FTFA: The nonprofit on Wednesday reiterated that no state nor district had seen the new framework before its unveiling and denied that any feedback from state officials was taken into consideration.

I call Most Excellent Bovine Excrement on this. It doesn't matter though because I know the history of my folks in this country, and I will teach this history to my kids, grandkids, and every other person who will listen. Racists will not be able to whitewash American history and erase the presence of Black people no matter how hard they try. Being Black in America is complex as hell and as Hubie said above...

hubiestubert: even the poorest, most destitute white man would hesitate to change places with Shaq or Robert L Johnson.

I believe the real fear is that teaching ALL of America's history will wipe that shine off that "city on a hill" and reveal the true image of America and its culture. Those who have wrapped their full identity in the ideals of Manifest Destiny and other things don't want to face the reality that their actions, while noble of their own desires, makes them look like full on terrorists and foreign invaders to the people they subjugated along the historical time line here.

Hey, they just want a world as they see it. One where we don't see color, but some are just more equal than others for... let's say reasons.

It sucks the College Board didn't fight it. My guess is they were concerned it would hurt them financially. Desantis is going after school accreditation orgs too.

what's funny is I thought we'd rolled back to, like, 1969 with the whole abortion thing but apparently Obama's malfunctioning time machine has thrown our reality back to the 1950s, at least.

I am 100% sure that Destanis actually read the requirements for the class and the materials required to complete it.  So he, of course, is able to object purely on the material provided rather than just being a racist dickhead.

One of the best recent examples of how hypocritical and ridiculous the GQP is, is to watch them try to ban all the things on one hand, then cry like farking babies about that shiatty propaganda network getting dropped by Directv as some kind of assault on their freedom on the other. I hate the GQP. There is nothing more detrimental to our nation right now than these grifting pieces of shiat playing culture wars and doing fark-all for our nation.

I also think the CollegeBoard is calling Desantis's bluff too.

"Fine, we took out the bits you rejected too so now it should meet your approval right?"

Man, if I were teaching I'd have to advise kids to seek out further reading on specific topics... probably lose my job within days of caring.

The underlying basis for DeSantis very loud and very nasty posturing is money -- he's attempting to trim the budget of any institution that would hinder him politically -- institutions like education, voting, ... even tourism.

2023-02-02 1:17:41 PM
Ron DeSantis and the AP Board both say there's no chilling effect, right as the effect makes itself known through the chilling out of the more prickly parts of a course on Black History. I'd say something about a dizzying intellect, but this is more like someone saying "I am not robbing you" while holding a gun in your face with one hand and taking your wallet out of your pocket with the other.

Oh, and: "I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually." -- James Baldwin

We have a much better understanding of racism in 2023 than we did in 1973. The average trend is in the right direction. But it's very hard to watch these "small government" authoritarian fascists try to reverse it. All Republicans are scum.

Teaching about subjects like CRT and reparations, does not mean you have to agree with them.  The idea, especially in AP courses, is to learn about and discuss those ideas. Ignoring them won't make them go away.

Did they say it under oath? No? Then it is probably just a lie. There's precious little downside to lying in press releases. Wish more people would start picking up on that, and just dismissing them out of hand.

I know they're neither Black nor African (both Brown), and from a period perhaps earlier than the course covers, but what if the lessons included the Biblical verse about how David and Johnathan shared "a love for each other deeper than any man had ever had for any woman"?

// there's your (snicker) point of entry, and from there you can talk about Brown/Black queers in antiquity
// any course on Black (US) History that doesn't mention James Baldwin hasn't covered the basics, and there's your point of entry for Black queers in modernity
// being bold, you could also mention that the mid-century FBI basically assumed that everyone they didn't like was queer in some form or fashion and wanted to find/use proof of same to undo them and their work - IIRC: Baldwin, Fred Hampton, MLK, and basically every other civil rights activist they could dedicate a file folder to - but that might paint queers in a sympathetic light and that's now verboten in FL

We get it, Republicans. You're homophobic white supremacists who want a tough-talking, authoritarian man to lead you.
