You would be better off building the Apocalypse tank.

2023-02-01 10:35:23 PM
Yah, if they could pull it off, it'd be great.

Not holding much hope that somebody who can't keep a coal fired aircraft carrier afloat can do that, though,

Can it at least cut an apple into 3 pieces?

With only four Marker vehicles in its fleet

Well, I guess it's a good for Russia we're only sending one tank. *touches ear* Sorry, I'm being informed I was incorrect, and we are sending 31 Abrams tanks.

/I wonder how many shots the four of them will get off before they're destroyed
//Also, how many of those shots will hit what they were aiming at
///And how many of what they were aiming at turns out to be Russia equipment.

How soon do the Russians expect to be battlefield testing a combat ready version of Miss Claridge?

After the impressive show of strength from the T90 'tank killers', I'm sure there are a lot of people trembling.  I understand a couple of those T90s armored Ladas lasted days, instead of hours.

While these previous tests were conducted in complex spaces like forests, according to Bendett, those environments are nothing approaching the sheer chaos the vehicle might expect to face in an actual combat situation in Donbas.

"Everyone agrees that our strike Marker should be prepared for their destruction along with the crews in the remaining time before the arrival of the Abrams and Leopards in Ukraine," Rogozin said.

Ah, of course. Wait...what? Someone care to diagram this?

Hinged: They already have an anti-tank system that's... 'decent'.

It's strange that they haven't started going into WW2 levels of arms & armor manufacture yet.  Maybe they will, who knows.

Sheer numbers (of everything) worked back then - i.e. quantity over quality.

... Because the absolutely overwhelming corruption that is intrinsic to how Russia operates makes effective, efficient mass production of basically anything impossible?

And this was before they were cut off from intermediate production-enabling components because of their unprovoked, illegal war - most crucially among them bearings, but also things like engines, turbines, robotic arms, computer stuff in general. And Western maintenance workers who show up to work sober that you need in order to actually make anything more complex than a steam hammer work.

Putting the nerds and accountants in charge is 100% mandatory to make mass production of sophisticated products work, and it's also something sociopathic thugs like Putin are fundamentally unable to do.

I'm sure those will work as well as the (in)famous russian anti-tank dogs... I wonder how many orcs and orc tanks their "AI" will kill before they quietly pulls the plug?

Soviet production during WW2 was largely due to American lend-lease. Aluminum, copper, aviation fuel, explosives, steel, etc. Were all pumped into Russia by the Americans in absolutely massive quantities. By the end of the war almost a third of its ammo and aviation fuel, half of its aircraft and tanks, and most of its logistics were American made. Putin can still up production, but he will never reach the same ballpark as the levels of WW2-era soviet production.

Then they'll do the same thing that Jabba the Hutt did to R2D2, make it serve drinks on someone's yacht.

I'm just wondering how long before we see one being towed by a tractor.

If it's autonomous, with the ability to independently identify, track, and prioritize targets via onboard AI ... bah, who am I kidding.

That thing is a sitting duck.

My guess is that it would have a limited operational range. Shouldn't be too hard to find a trailer nearby with its operators, fuel truck parked next to an ammo supply,  etc.

Oh a new wonder weapon like at the start of the war when the Russians were going to issue that high tech body armor to their soldiers. It was supposed to be bullet proof and explosion proof, how's that working out for them?

2023-02-02 4:58:29 AM
Given how swimmingly everything else has been going for them, I fully expect these things to have a faulty FoF system and pummel their own tanks.

However, China doesn't have a dog in this fight (yet).

China has copied russian jets, tanks, aircraft carriers, and small arms for their military build-up.

Their whole f*cking kennel is based on russian tech.
...
There is no doubt that China is providing ordnance to russia. It's just tricky to prove.

If they had working versions of these they would already have been deployed. They have not. And do not.

Russia lies.

Espsecially since he is conscripting all the nerds and accountants and sending them to Ukraine with no training and equipment that sucks even by Russian standards.

Brilliant idea. Send in drones overland, with infantry behind them to direct the armor, instead of using something in the air that can evade and drop munitions at incoming tanks. Unless, you're sending a Zerg Rush of these things, and with four on field right now, that's not exactly enough to even cover much more than a company, you're not gonna see much of an effect. I mean, other than Ukrainians stealing the damn things to put into their tank museums.

I think russia should  design a robot tank to steal Ukrainian washers and dryers, computer cpu's and gpu's and commercial airplane parts.

I see the tank-killing Soviet dogs, but no mention of the WWII German Goliath, which was a tank-killing robot that did not work very well.  Basically a cute little RC tank, seems like a good idea except they were easy to jam and had a very short range.

Is anyone else reminded of the German robot that died of radiation on the roof of the Chernobyl plant?

My old Regiment had a disarmed Goliath.  We used to scavenge batteries from the jeeps, and had a thunderflash gun (a metal tube we'd put a oll of toilet paper in along with a thunder flash).  We'd then drive it around and battle the officers, who had a small field gun.

So, unarmored vehicle controlled by an AI that's in beta at best, that they have... 4 of.
Vs. 141 tanks, split over 3 different models (Leopard, Abrams, and Challenger), any of which can one-shot the thing. If they ever get the chance before a drone, someone with a hand-launched rocket, or any number of other defenses take them out.

All they've basically done here is inform the tractor operators that there's going to be some particularly shiny salvage to grab in a few days.

The prior version's range was 300-500 meters, which makes it suitable for fighting a reasonably well-armed HOA.

But that thing can totally dominate a cul-de-sac.

That thing wouldn't survive the DC Beltway.  It would be outgunned, stripped of weapons and wheels, then set on fire.

I will bet money that instead of the advanced electronics it needs to work they will use children or dwarves to drive it.

That would require an effective manufacturing base.

Russia, on the other hand, would rather sell oil and gas.  Oil and gas is easier - it tolerates corruption well, doesn't take many educated workers, and doesn't require innovation.

And once a nation optimizes to sell oil, that farks up the exchange rate in a way that doesn't favor other industries.  If everyone is buying your oil, then you have the money to buy their manufactured goods at a cheaper price.

So that's what the electronics from a couple of thousand microwaves and dishwashers looks like.  I'm pretty sure the robotics team at my high school could whip up something that would flip that think over then ignite sparklers as it dances on its turtled corpse.  F Russia.

Can you imagine how many blindspots it probably has in its camera coverage? Even a tank crew, with periscopes, cameras and portholes has better visibility to what's around them. We're going to see video of these things driving off an overpass because they thought there was nothing but road in front of them.

If we're bringing back the oldies, I suggest the WW2 German Goliath mobile anti-tank mine.

I always liked the design, but the concept was way ahead of the available tech. It was too slow and broke down a lot. And yes, the 40k Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) has a Forge World version (the smaller one):
