Why is an oversized  chrome pill being hailed as art ? It has no grace, movement or elegance. It inspires no philosophical wondering, soul searching or flights of fancy. Some Farker who likes this thing educate me, because I am not seeing it.

Plus, it's not even as big as Chicago's.

The 40-ton squashed version of Chicago's 110-ton sculpture has been under construction at the Jenga building since February of 2019. Work on the installation, which sits below a second-floor overhang

Nothing says "likely to stand the test of time" like "under the second floor overhang at the Jenga building".

It blocks the sidewalk quite well.

This piece is about the inadequacy of traditional imagery and symbols to convey meaning in todays world. By abandoning representationalism the artist is free to express themself with pure form.  Specific interpretation gives way to a more visceral response

/admittedly though, their oeuvre is monochromatic

Of course not. NYers are more efficient, capable of much more condensed stupidity.

It's a funhouse mirror.  I bet it's great when it's reflecting the sun right into your face.

I thought International Artist and Dickbag Anish Kapoor didn't like his Chicago art wobble being called a Bean.

If so...I'm happy that the NY one is being called a bean already.

That'll really annoy him...so much so, that he'll need to roll in his piles of money a few minutes longer to take the sting away.

If New York's bean is smaller than Chicago's does that mean tourists will have a harder time finding it, making it less pleasurable for New Yorkers?

Can we agree that pizza shouldn't be a casserole nor should it have a consistency/flavor that's the same as the pizza box?

Chicago makes a popular pizza-inspired casserole.

A friend of mine worked at Millennium Park while everything was under construction. Apparently, Kapoor got into a fight with Jaume Plensa (the Crown Fountain designer) after Plensa repeatedly called it The Bean, to the point where security had to be called in to separate them.

Anish Kapoor is a doosh and New York pizza is better. There, I've ended the thread.

It's right around the corner from me at the moment (I'm in the neighborhood) and I walked by yesterday. It looks cool, kind of squashed in under that building (which building itself looks cool). I don't know that it has any deeper meaning.

When I say "looks cool" by the way, I mean looks cool to me. YMMV. Art is inherently subjective.

Then he really ought to have named it himself.  Because right now, the options are "The New York City Bean" or nothing from him.

The vessel with the pestle holds the bean with the poison. The chalice from the palace has the brew that is true.

In my personal opinion everything man made is art. I seldom mention that because I do not know much about art and thought I was probably missing some nuance. But I just did some googling on the subject and found the following:

In the Oxford dictionary, art is defined as, "The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination." This is more than true when relating to anything that mankind has created in the history of the world.

So it looks like my opinion is shared by at least one other person. So by that definition this bean is art. But I do not think it is good or original art, but again I do not know much about the subject.

/this post is art
//your post too

Never been to NYC, but I've been to Chicago and had the pizza.  I almost spit my beer out when they said it would be forty minutes to cook!

Ain't nobody got time for that!

I'm touched by the artistic feeling I'm getting from this creation.  Now, which farker/farkette is going to take themselves in hand and go over to Tribeca to flick the Bean?

A proper slice is crisp on the bottom, a large slice with crack when you fold it.

My favorite places to get a slice going all the way to the 70s, and they are still there making awesome pizza;

New Park Pizza, Cross Bay Blvd Howard Beach Queens, been there since 56' same family, uses a brick oven.

Dani's House of Pizza, Leffert's Blvd, Kew Gardens, Queens, been there since 59, same family, Ramiz died a while back but his son still runs the place. Super crisp crust and bit sweeter sauce.

Alfie's Pizza, 117th St Richmond Hill Queens, between Myrtle Ave and Jamaica Ave where Hillside Ave, Jamaica Ave and Leffert's Blvd all come together under the El. If I recall Alfie opened the place in the early 70s. He died a few years back but the family still runs it. Even though Dani's was always my favorite pizza, this was my go to as a kid as it was just a few blocks from my house and Dani's was a long walk to Kew Gardens. Alfie had a crush on my mother back in the early late 70s and every time I have ever walked into that restaurant since I was middle school Alfie would ask me how my mother was doing. Even as recently as 4 years ago when I stopped in with my brother and best friend since high school.

Chicago's Bean has fewer visible seams. The Cloud Gate went way over budget because it takes a lot longer than it might seem to polish a mirror finish over welded seams.

Also, when visitors talk about Chicago pizza, they sound like yokels from the sticks.

It's like going to New York, and asking about touring the Statue of Liberty.
