Never even heard of it.

They should do a "Batman" TV show! He's way more popular than Alfred!

The should make one called "Martha!," where, in each season, another pearl drops to the ground.

I thought this was going to be about the band, Pennywise living destitute, bankrupt, and broke.

I'm shopping a new show about the adventures of Batman's dog sitter called Batsitter. There's a bidding war between Netflix and HBO Max.

Batwoman had Julia Pennyworth.  Niece of Alfred, aware of Bruce Wayne's secret, ex-lover of Kate Kane, and MI-6 agent.  I could stand to see more of her.

Gunn and Safran developing a new True Detective-style take on the (Green Lantern)...

Hmmmmm

If it was like the Alfred-as-detective segments in the old Batman comics, it's just something to flip over anyway.

I think Marvel lost more when they broke off relations with Netflix.

Sean Pertwee was the definitive early Alfred.

Me neither, how on earth has it had three seasons? This sounds like something I would have watched, too.

Well crap. Doom Patrol getting axed, it was quite excellent (though kind of drifting a bit lately). The Grant Morrison early plots and  bizarreness made for some great TV. I assume Peacemaker is back. And Harley Quinn has a season upcoming. That's a plus.

It amuses me that out of the entire DC pantheon they opted to make a show about the cute old butler with no powers that we've been seeing in various forms for the last 40 years. It's like DC has realized all of their characters actually suck, and it's tradition keeping their brand alive

2023-02-02 7:39:01 AM
I expect them to scrap every project that doesn't fit into the Gunnverse, regardless of quality or popularity (or lack of it).

I watched the pilot (it's on HBO Max) and while I liked the setting (alternate 1960s UK), none of the characters were that interesting.

I think I'd rather catch up with Doom Patrol than continue with Pennyworth.

So... everything DC is dying at HBO?
That is... quick calculation... all but Oliver's show and... uh... they cancelled the Nevers, hrm.  And Raised by wolves.
Wait, what is left on HBO now (other than Harley and Peacemaker)?

Oh, dragon tits.   That is it, right?

Great visuals, very cool look. Horrible story lines, bad scripts, bad acting and boring. It won't be missed by many.

Nowadays a superhero related show who's main character is a "cis gendered ", white heterosexual Christian male (with a British accent no less)?!! I'm shocked this thing ever saw the light day.

It'd be neat if Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman's moms were all retconned to also be named Martha.

I liked the pilot well enough but I think I tapped out after 2-3 episodes. Just wasn't that great. Wasn't bad. Well, was kinda bad. Just a pretty meh kinda show.

Great_Milenko: Sean Pertwee was the definitive early Alfred.

Gotham

was such a glorious, stupid, trainwreck and I loved all of it. Nobody knew what decade they were actually living in, plotlines disappeared for no damn reason, Paul Reubens had a crossover role from Batman Returns, and somehow Doctor Bashir turned into one hell of a silver fox as Ra's al ghul.

Sounds like nobody actually watched it. Too bad. First two seasons were great, then it lost direction a bit. Not much to do with Batman or his buttling career that came later.

Armoured green chain mail buttlings.

Ok. sorry but this has been bothering me for a while.

The 1940's Dick Grayson cobbled together his own costume which Bruce Wayne signed off on, because "t'was a simpler time".

The second "Robin" appears, and not only does he not fashion his own suit, Batman hands him the tight red tunic, booty shorts, panty hose and elf boots and said "you wear, dis".

And 'twas a simpler time" kinda, but not that simple.

/anyways, 3 whole years, wow.

How about a series about the M.E. who examined the Wayne's bodies?

Or, why not a series about the girl in the ticket booth that sold the Wayne family their tickets to the show that night?

Marksrevenge: A show about the butler? How could people NOT be lining up to watch that?

Especially because all the comics interpretations where Alfred was some sort of badass before the whole Batman thing were crap that ruined the character.

The whole fun of Alfred was the running implication that he basically randomly picked up various mad ninja skills as part of his duties as a butler to accompany and support his employer at various social events, which he interpreted to include the occasional gang-fight etc.  He was the most literal 'supporting character' in existence, to the point it was entirely believable that he'd put in 20k hours at the shooting range during his time with Bruce just because he was that good at planning around his employer's probable needs.

He was also at his peak fun level when he'd buttle so hard that he'd straight-up resolve the plot of the comic without breaking character for a single instant.  He was basically the walking hard-counter to the Penguin because Penguin's whole deal is wanting to be part of high society and Alfred immediately goes full Butler on anyone who opens the door, very much including people in weird costumes with masks or deformities etc.

// Alfred being the same butler as Bruce's parents' butler was actually kind of inconsistent between early comics, especially bronze and silver-age books; it was often implied that he'd been hired after Batman was already Batman specifically because his professional tolerance of employer weirdness extended to mask and cape nonsense.  It got fully canonized that he was a surrogate father to Bruce only later on when writers decided that Batman was too edgy and grim to ever actually be any fun, and every character in existence got rewritten for pathos with... varying levels of effectiveness depending on the writer and how good they were at managing tone on a scale of zero to Bruce Timm.

I watched half of the first season.  While I totally didn't hate the show, the fact that it took place in an alternative universe where post-war England was a fascist dictatorship, where public executions, including secret ones where the victim is masked but still in public (it was an obvious plot-point) and they did a terrible job of explaining this wasn't what Great Britain was really like in the Monty Python era, really bothered me.

Well, I'm clearly in the minority but I watched all three seasons. I liked it.

It was a take on the Batman Begins Michael Caine Alfred. When the guy was young, he'd have looked like Michael Caine's Alfie character. Make him ex-British Special Forces, put him in an alternate-universe 1960s Great Britain where the Queen is single, the government of the day does public executions in her name and has a Mad Science division, a fascist British group tries to take control in a coup and Martha and Thomas are mixed up with CIA plots and get an actor does a pretty darned good Alfie as Alfred and it was something I looked forward to each week.

To be fair, Season Two did get a little off the tracks but I have no fault with Season Three or One and come on, Alfred gets to raw-dog a foxy young single Queen after saving her from a bomb and what's not to like there?

There's lots worse than this on TV and now we'll never see a Season 4 with Alfred presumably hitting the States with the Waynes and their daughter. I presume something nasty happens to her before Bruce comes along which is why they were extra doting on him as a tot. I was looking forward to seeing more. Oh well. :(

They go into it briefly with a quickie explanation earlier on. There, apparently there wasn't a World War 2 and the fascist governments matured in the intervening 20 years just doing little spats amongst themselves and their neighbors but not The Big One. Nuclear MAD came about with a Hitler-less Nazi Germany and Stalinist Russia.

They buzzed thru it quickly and it was a few years ago now but I think that's the general idea.

Dead on and nice to see it's not just me that gets that.  I've hate watched a few shows through because I wasn't apathetic ("Bones" was a show I only watched for the supporting cast as I hated the lead characters).
Took me a long time to start spotting my apathy for a show and no longer feel bad that I've given up on it.
