Rape is not a "dumb mistake".  Even when a football player does it.  Please don't dismiss it like that.

He's an undrafted free-agent who has been on the practice squad all year, appearing in 1 game (vs Atlanta)

He's a backup, he's only taken the field in 1 game.   That's why you've never heard of him.   The police had probably never heard of him either until recently..

Wonder what's up with that.

It's not smart (i.e. dumb) and it's not the right thing to do (i.e. a mistake). Does the wording cop care to suggest a better alternative?

I don't think that was the part they were disagreeing with.

Call it a dumb choice, or a dumb action to take, but calling it a mistake downplays their agency in the act.

A "mistake" would be an unforced error, e.g. mistakenly stepping in dog poo. Generally, rape is not a thing which can be done by mistake.

A "dumb mistake" is a careless thing, or something one does out of ignorance.  Rape requires intention.  It is not a simple, easily-dismissed, boys-will-be-boys "Oops."

Does the rape apologist care to suggest a better mansplanation?

I think mistake has a broad enough definition to include anything you did that you shouldn't have done, for any reason. Mistake =/= accident. And as far as I can tell, every major dictionary I can find seems to agree. I can't speak for kdawg7736, but I'd bet dollars to donuts he wasn't trying to imply it was an accident.

No, that would be an 'accident'.

A mistake is doing something that's wrong.  Whether intentional or not.

Considering how often Fark isn't even in the ballpark with words (White Knighting comes to mind), how about we lay off the word police?

/This is why people say 'sorry I made a mistake' for anything they do wrong.  Could be a REALLY bad mistake, could be a minor one.  But it's a mistake none-the-less.  Accident means whoopsie.

While technically correct, "mistake" definitely has the connotation of being something done in good faith not the deliberate choice to do something wrong.

I don't get what the hell is going on with the length of time that went by.  She reported it right away, told the cops who it was, and there was evidence of a struggle.  That alone should be enough to make an arrest.  I guess maybe they were waiting for DNA results to come back, but still.  And the fact that the NFL or anyone else wasn't aware of it?  Someone who knew the victim and what happened could have easily dropped an anonymous tip to a sportswriter.

I took it as a jab at people who say a "mistake" like that shouldn't ruin a persons life.  I guess I have a weird sense of humor though.

Considering there is now a special prosecutor involved, my money is that the Guernsey County Sheriff didn't think that some girl reporting that a star college football player raped her was a big deal.

And that is reinforced the part where they specify it was reported immediately and warranted investigation but doesn't say there was an investigation at the time.

Ah yes, conspiracy theories because you don't know what the special prosecutors office does and couldn't be bothered to read the article.

The Special Prosecutions Section in the office of Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost seeks to offer prosecutors statewide the support and resources they need to consistently excel in their work.
The section is comprised of seasoned prosecutors, each with experience in at least 20 felony jury trials. Our attorneys have expertise in a wide range of cases, from child abuse, human trafficking and capital murder to financial crimes, drug trafficking/wiretap and public corruption.

Because there absolutely hasn't been numerous cases over the past couple decades where reports of rapes were not investigated (see various places that have sat on untested rape kits for years) or where cops covered up things done by star football players.

Given the information available in TFA (and that the links to the prosecutor's office aren't working), it seems to be the most likely reason that this would come up now with an indictment.

NFL teams know everythingabout the players they sign. They have people who do just that sort of research for a living. So the Eagles absolutely knew about something that would come up in a Google search but chose to sign him anyway.

This is what people are talking about when they talk about "rape culture." The fact that fans won't hold the Eagles accountable now that it's come to light is simply another example.
