Did he 100% use donations to do it?
Is there a paper trail for the donations?
Documentation on the 1000 people?

He wouldn't need to, the ad revenue off of any of his videos would've been enough to cover it.
That should cover the second question as well.
The people in the video? I guess could all be actors along with the doctors but the streamer is mega rich with multiple companies including one for charity specifically, so I'd probably guess that he knows what paperwork needs to be involved and that making a video otherwise documenting fraud would be pretty stupid.

If you want to get cynical though about it, it's pretty farked up that $1,000 people who couldn't afford access to healthcare to save their vision (he says they're blind in the video though cataract surgery doesn't cure blindness, though it does make it possible to see much better again) and that they have to rely on the generosity of a rich person who wanted to make streaming content and absolutely more than likely that he made more money than he spend on the procedure. The procedure full out of pocket if done in an OR without insurance contracts is around $12k, and he makes tens of millions of dollars for each video.

So yeah the most cynical thing about this is that if you have a medical condition in the US that you can't afford treatment for you might have to wait until a rich streamer decides the condition is potentially viral enough (pun intended!) to be used as video content.

Terrible news about our country.

We can't even afford to give people the surgeries they need. Have to crowd source medical care.

2023-02-01 12:12:06 PM
It's horrible that people need charity to get healthcare. Yes, it's nice of him to step up, but we shouldn't need rich philanthropists to help people get healthcare in a civilized country.

I can't tell why the part that he's doing this as a massively well-paying job bothers people. Would they rather have one more CEO of one more Purdue Pharma?

It doesn't bother me he's doing this as a well-paying job. Good on him for doing so.

It bothers me that those people had to wait until someone decided they'd make good video content to get medical care.

No, I've never donated to anything in my life. Can you point me to an active fund to cure people who pretend they can't understand a discussion point in order to maintain their ability to assume they know anything about a stranger on the internet?

Probably also for those suffering from complete blindness, such as those who have total cataracts without light through their lens long enough that no surgery will correct it. But I guess defending slight criticism of a streamer is more important than any of the other context of the cruelty of the medical system in general, so yay, at least y'all got to the important part of my comment.

My apologies for commenting on MrBeast saying he's curing blindness.

Lumbar Puncture: (snip) The procedure full out of pocket if done in an OR without insurance contracts is around $12k, and he makes tens of millions of dollars for each video.

Well... no. His biggest ever video (Squid Game) is currently at 355M views, and at around a buck per thousand views earned, it only pulled in $355,000 on its own. He does reportedly earn about $50M per year in total though (between ad rev from all his uploads & also a few licensed retail products), and is hopeful to be YouTube's first billionaire by the end of the '20s. So if anyone can afford to occasionally spend a few million bucks curing blindness, it's him. Pretty amazing for a 24-year-old kid just having fun with his friends.

this kind of chit do not make me feel good, it's just the best evidence ever that we are terrible uncivilized a holes.

Actual civilization wouldn't some rando 'good sanitarian' to help blind people, we'd be civilized and taking care of this ourselves as par for the course systematic for all heath care.

you can only feel good about this, if you believe this is also the right way for these people to get their help, and not that we as a group ought to just be civilized and provide that already cause you were simply born as a member of our civilization.

I don't think eye care is covered in Canada by the medical care either. I always needed private coverage to get glasses and eye exams. I think they might pay for eye exams (but not glasses or surgeries) for children and those over 65, but it's been a while since I looked it into it.

Legally blind person here.  The definition is broader than people think because there are numerous eye disorders that leave you with vision but nowhere near enough to function.  Take my glasses off and everything 6 inches past my nose is watercolor impressionist finger painting.  Best doctors can do for me is a retinal cleaning that would essentially give me the same vision as I do with glasses, which still isn't great.

Well, good news because most of the surgeries were not done in the US, the majority were done overseas.

hoyt clagwell: Who is Mr. Beast?

He's a YouTuber who is worth about $105 million. His company pulls in $3M a month in ad revenue due to views; and with 131 million subscribers, he's easily the biggest channel on YT and has pulled in 22 billion views.

He got popular by doing these giveaways and games for people. To grow his channel he used to take all the ad revenue he got from an episode and put it into the next, making everything bigger. Just over his 5 biggest giveaways he's given away $6.1 million dollars worth of prizes, and probably $25 to 50 million overall. He was also the driver behind "Team Trees" that planted 20 million trees or something in a year.

In his interviews he has often said that he doesn't need money, doesn't even really like it. Drives a crappy car and largely lives simply just having fun with his friends. It's pretty nice to see today.

I've heard that! It's a genius business model, because outside of one store, all the others are served by ghost kitchens or family restaurants as a separate business model, and they handle everything from marketing to food orders.

Ghost kitchens are a big thing now. They exploded in popularity when COVID hit in 2020. A good portion of the restaurants in my area are ghost kitchens.

We can talk all day about how they SHOULD have had the surgery anyway. But at least they can see now.

It reminds me of the homeless advocates who would rather people sleep in piss on the sidewalk than enter an "Inhumane" shelter.
