Luckily, no one will ever talk about "Gen X shiat."

Because Gen X shiat is ignored.

Rest assured, whatever it is that you hold dear today will one day be labeled shiat by future generations.  It's the circle of life.

Tom Waits and the National? This is a good list.

Though I'm not ok with the Nationals sound referred to as "sad dads music".

With the exception of Tom Waits, I hadn't heard of any of those either but I'm farkin' 72 years old. I know what qualified as a masterpiece when I started to listen to albums but that was back in the Century of the Fruitbat.

Please. Empire Records -- both the movie and the soundtrack -- will be considered the high culture of the 20th century for thousands of years to come.

The Flaming Lips: The Soft Bulletin

Heard it when it first came out. I didn't get it. Years later it somehow popped up again on my radar. A couple more listens and suddenly I couldn't get it out of my head. One of my favorite lines from the Questionable Content comic is where Dora hears the album for the first time:

"Why do I suddenly want to dance around giggling like an idiot while a smiling man in a white suite throws confetti at me?"

/And then I listened to Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots and...WHOA

I'm a dad. When I'm sad The National is one of my go-to bands. Also the sadder Wilco songs.

Is The War on Drugs dad-rock? shiat. Sensing a pattern.

Not even Tom Waits?  I mean I could understand the others but he's very influential.  He's sorta like the Bob Dylan of the 80s in terms of influence in the music world and not even Bob Dylan could even be remotely considered the Bob Dylan of the 80s.  In fact the actual Bob Dylan of the 80s was a scary thing.

Surprisingly solid list. Kudos to subby for the nod to Surfer Rosa in the headline.

Agreed that Boxer by The National is a masterpiece. I've found their subsequent records increasinly meh, but Boxer is so goddamn good.

I can't help but be bored by The Walkmen--I much prefer Jonathan Fire*Eater. However, The Rat is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Very happy to see Swordfishtrombones get its due. It always seems to be set aside in favor of Rain Dogs, but I prefer Swordfishtrombones. Sixteen Shells from a Thirty-Ought-Six is my favorite Waits tune. Also, Kathleen Brennan is the best thing to happen to Waits's career. Once they got together, his music got far stranger and was all the better for it.

Side note for Kyuss fans, Rhino just re-released the "best of" Muchas Gracias comp on blue vinyl last month.
If you're a completist, it's nice to have an affordable copy to add to your collection. Rare tracks, b-sides, live stuff a sprinkling of studio tracks.

NuclearPenguins: I've heard of Tom Waits. Can't say I've ever heard any of his music, but I know who he is at least.

You probably have and didn't know it. His song Way Down in the Hole is used in the opening credits of The Wire. Another track of his, "Goin' Out West" is on the Fight Club soundtrack, though you don't hear his trademark voice in that scene.

His songs are covered all the time. Probably the most notable are Bruce Springsteen covering Jersey Girl, Rod Stewart covering Downtown Train, Johnny Cash covering Down There by the Train, and The Ramones covering I Don't Wanna Grow Up.

He also has a ton of acting roles including Renfield in Dracula (the Francis Ford Coppola version), the engineer in The Book of Eli (the guy who recharges batteries), the gold prospector in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and a member of Robert Redford's crew in The Old Man & The Gun.

I'd have picked Bone Machine for Waits, but swordfish is god damned brilliant.
I'd nominate Spiritualized's ladies and gentlemen we're floating in space to this list because, damn. Repeat listens keep me off drugs.

Well, aren't I the hipster in this thread.  I own one of those albums.   And I have heard of at least 2 of the other bands.

I got into Tom Waits because another band I like covered at least one of his songs.

You can hear Kyuss's influence on the Artic Monkeys Humbug album. I think the Josh Homme actually produced it. Pretty good list.

2. Call them "masterpieces"

He's in almost all of Jim Jarmusch's movies. Coffee & Cigarettes, The Dead Don't Die have him AND Iggy. Such a great scene:

Frankly his best performance is either in Mystery Men or Fishing with John.  But Down by Law is a close 3rd

And you were 100% correct.

Welcome to sky valley prolly my favorite of the 5 they put out (yes I'm including the sons of Kyuss ep).

The first album I heard by Tom Waits was Blue Valentine I think. Shocked by his voice I asked if we were listening to the Cookie Monster.

His magnificent catalogue is my go to for my depression and self pity.

Okay, I'm not nearly the philistine I thought I was. I have heard a few of these on a listen through.

To the Pixies in particular, though, "Where Is My Mind" feels like the Odd Man out in that album; it feels polished. Maybe it's the mastering, but the rest of that Album is really hard to listen to.
