The revamp was pretty boring, really. I think they were a little gun-shy after getting sued out of existence.

In a memo sent to company staffers Wednesday, Goldberg wrote, "Gawker published a lot of brilliant pieces in these nearly two years.

Among the last stories published on Gawker were "Andrea Riseborough Guilty of Being a Good Actor With Friends Who Appreciate Her"; "Robert Zemeckis: I Love Using the Computer to Make Tom Hanks Look Insane"; "Why Is Taylor Swift Always Showing Feet?"; "The Best and Worst Media TikTok Accounts"; and "Surprising No One, George Santos Is a Disney Adult."

It's a shame that we'll be deprived of this kind of quality journalism.

They should have enabled comments.  Otherwise they were just the corkboard you pass by in the hallway but never read; zero engagement.

Jeebus Saves: Why Is Taylor Swift Always Showing Feet?

Because she has a crush on Quentin Tarantino?

The comments were the best part of Gawker and Deadspin

And io9. Articles ranging from hard examinations of consequences of technology to some loon advocating for converting all wild animals to vegetarianism, and both would have a full share of both insightful comments and hilariously wrong observations.

Well, that's a bummer. I check I09 almost daily and Gawker has good tech reviews or links to deals.

The best thing old Gawker did was unionize, which led to the self-absorbed world of New York media to finally grow a class conscious and identify less with their billionaire owner class. As for the writing... it was hiat or miss, and their collapse because of the Hulk Hogan sex tape (and really about outing Peter Thiel earlier) was self-inflicted.

Hopefully the Big Tech stranglehold on the ad market is busted up and the remaining sites under the Gizmodo banner are able to survive, and maybe one day thrive again

That's the thing, I was stoked when they relaunched but they also stated that they were actively trying to not be as snarky/irreverent as they were before.

Which is what made the old Gawker so appealing.

It's like they relaunched pizza and got rid of the melty cheese.

That one sounds good
