We get Peacock as part of our cable package somehow. I don't know why. I haven't tried to figure out if its some with or is some promotion thing. So many options change so fast I've just resigned myself to go with the flow. If something disappears, I find a new thing.

Peacock said last week it crossed 20 million paid subscribers but expects losses, which amounted to $2.5 billion in 2022, to widen to $3 billion this year.

One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong,
Can you tell which thing is not like the others

You only really need one, maybe two streaming services. I have just HBO and am still overwhelmed.

They are obviously going to make it up on Volumn.

No cable, so I signed up when they debuted, thinking I'd get MSNBC, their own farking brand.  But no, mostly just a lot of crap I would never watch.  So I never went for the subscription, but I guess I won't be a noob and get the freebie, which is nice.

One benefit, I did get to watch the World Cup live.  In Spanish.

I got a year of Peacock on black friday for 99 cents a month for a year. Its well worth that for soccer & NFL coverage. The documentaries on there are decent as well. Also, since I must say I do enjoy WWE PPV threads here, having access to WWE PPV's for 99 cents is nice.

I started to subscribe to Peacock when they moved the Jeopardy tournament and SNL there from Hulu. Then I said "Nah fark this" and I just watch the clips on YouTube. I'm not paying an entire service to watch a handful of shows that I can just do without.

I finally watched Parks and Rec via Comcast-> Peacock. Has like three one minute commercial breaks per episode. Lots of repeating commercials, but they only last a minute, so not horrible.

So... I can watch NBC at home with a ton of commercials... For free.  OR... If I'm real good, I can also PAY to watch NBC... With commercials.

This is why it annoys me so much when redditors and farkers constantly bellyache and say they're going to pirate because 'there's so many services and it's so expensive'.

No one says you have to subscribe to all of them.  It takes absolutely ZERO effort to cancel.  Even if you don't struggle with money, my bet is that you're probably only looking at one or two of them anyway.  No one has the time to actually watch 5 or 6 services simultaneously.

/As far as peacock, the service is absolutely horrendous beyond words.  Constantly doesn't work, constantly broken, the closed captioning never works, etc.  And most stuff worth watching was mostly hidden behind the premium tier anyway.  I think I've used it maybe 3 times since it launched and everytime was an awful experience.

And, if you really want to watch NBC programming, you can DVR it and fast forward through the commercials.  Can't do that with the app.

I got the cock for 99 cents a month on black friday.  I didn't realize it was the cheap cock with commercials but hey, its 99 cents a month for a year so I can't complain too much.  That is how the cookie crumbles when one opts for the cheap cock.

2023-02-01 3:21:26 PM
I can't see how this doesn't backfire like whoa.  It comes with my tubes so it's always been free for me and it's been nice to have around, they've had some good documentaries and stand-up shows and stuff, piles of Hitchcock flicks show up for a few weeks a couple times a year, etc., but I can't imagine paying for it.

2023-02-01 3:34:27 PM
None of the streaming services are making money, which I find hilarious.

2023-02-01 3:39:18 PM
Most of you would probably be better off just buy of Curiosity Stream premium for $70 a year and Shudder for $55 a year .

The NBCUniversal streaming service, which marketed itself as being "free as a bird" at launch, now requires new subscribers to opt for its $4.99 or $9.99 monthly plans.

How about I opt for $0.00 and just steal what I want off Bit torrent?

I have enough streaming services.
I get Disney+ and HBO Max free cause I have Verizon FIOS for my internet and AT&T for my phone.
I have YouTube TV and YouTube Premium.
I have Amazon Prime so I get their video service free.
That's more than enough.

Man sometime around the mid-aughts or so this stuff just started sounded trashy.

Anything with ads is not free. This whole 'free with ads' is like a modern day newspeak with how people delude themselves.

It costs you thirty minutes to watch 20 minutes for a regular TV show these days. For American football it is closer to doubling your time at near 3h30m for about 1h30m of game and halftime break.

jake3988: And most stuff worth watching was mostly hidden behind the premium tier anyway.

I came here to say "Peacock had a real free tier?"

I joined not long after they launched it. Wanted to check out Lost Speedways, being a fan of Dale Jr., racing history, and abandoned stuff. Free tier, despite all the ads for Peacock, had exactly one episode.

But today we pay for the lower tier because they have all of Mrs. F's Bravo shows and figure skating.

/They also have Nascar....exactly one race a year that's usually also on NBC.
//Also see the occasional movie on there...when it's working.

The ad placement sucks though.  I miss the days when ads were placed in between scenes instead of arbitrarily dropping into the middle of a dramatic (or comedic) moment.

I picked up Peacock's free tier last year once what Mrs. Pyynkcalls my old man tv migrated to Peacock from Amazon Prime. I haven't really paid attention to anything else on the service, but $5 or whatever a month for Poker Face is totally worth it for me.

Pyynk: but $5 or whatever a month for Poker Face is totally worth it for me.

I loved Poker Face through about two and a half episodes, and then it started to wear out its welcome. Episode 4 didn't even particularly rely on the protagonist's superpower, and instead turned on an odd set of "just so" clues. It felt too cute by half.

Still, I'll give it more chances and continue to watch when the next episodes drop. I do like the device of telling a story, and then retelling it with the protagonist involved.

(Also, pro tip: if you have a magic ability to tell when someone is lying and want to use it in poker, for fark's sake, lose a couple of games so your cover isn't blown!)

Finally someone who gets it. Whenever I point that out my comments always gets funnied like I'm saying something preposterous. I currently have Hulu and I also use Roku, which has tons of free content. My daughter has Netflix, which I watch when I'm over there. You Tube has tons of free content like PBS news and documentaries, as well as tons of kids content.

When there is a show I want to watch I'll get the service for a month then cancel, like I did with Showtime when I wanted to see the new Dexter show, cost me a whopping 99 cents.

I know they offer a free do-dad for steaming but I never take them up on it. I remember the times I'd have to have them remove a modem rental fee on a modem that I owned.  I could see a fee for that Peacock device suddenly pop up on my bill down the road.

Like, Flex or something?  They sent me one of those and it was pretty much identical to Roku, which I'd had for years.  100% pointless.

You really don't need an ad supported do-dad for steaming. You can steam things, absolutely free and without ads, using stuff you already have in your kitchen.

Got an email in late December asking if I wanted to pay $19.99 for a year's worth of Peacock, so I pulled the trigger. Girls5Eva is all right, and we just started Poker Face. My wife got me to start watching  The Traitors with her. Kind of a weird concept for a reality show, but Alan Cumming seems like he's having a blast. The commercials for La Brea crack me up, too.
Just browsed through the app, looks like they have 7 seasons of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, so that's pretty cool.

Thanks because I really had no idea. I'm going to make a fine elderly person soon enough because I find the mix of channels and apps on the TV weird.

I've found Peacock Premium to be one of what I call the "three monthers" - one of the services I sign up for once a month every three months. Catch up on everything I want to to in a month, then move on to the next three monther service. You can just cycle through them. Right now the three monthers are Netflix, Peacock, and Paramount+.

Hulu is still on my permanent list but it's rapidly moving towards becoming part of my "four monther" service rotation.

I'm kind of surprised more people don't do this. A service has one or two good shows, why subscribe for a whole year unless you got the deal of a lifetime on Cyber Monday or something?

I want to do this with Apple TV and the final season of Ted Lasso, the only ongoing thing that Apple TV has that's worthwhile. Mrs. F wants to take this up to 11 and watch the entire season during her one-week free trial.
