Not that different than the experience of crossing the street -- that's not a freeway -- in Phoenix.  When I lived there, I was directly across the street from some shops.  Things you'd use regularly like a grocery store, liquor store, drug store, and a couple fast foot places.  Despite being a city-level street, it was 6 lanes of traffic going close to 50mph (35 speed limit + speeding) to cross to get there.  Walking up to the intersection and crossing with the light wasn't much better because there was a turn light the same time as your walk light and everyone would just drive through it, along with the right on red drivers going the other way.

It was farking like 150m to get to the store and it ended up being faster and definitely safer to just get in my car and drive over there.
