and, of course, the only time the forecast calls for clear skies is friday night with a low of 9

We've tried to view it the last two nights and failed. Of course there's so much light pollution in the Sac metro area that I can't even see the Milky Way so that's very likely why. I would need to travel out to a dark sky location.

We saw NEOWISE and that was pretty amazing.

I also saw Hale-Bopp and that was by far the best comet I've ever witnessed. Easily visible to the naked eye in canyon country Utah.

Meh. Its a comet. Once you see one youve seen em all.

And the only cool ones are the ones visable during daylight

That's pretty cold, but on the positive side any ceramic superconductors you have should be working.

Hale-Bopp was visible from my childhood backyard in Houston. That thing was bright.

I actually first saw Hale-Bopp while driving. I was completely out of the loop and didn't even know there was going to be a comet nearby, randomly looked up at the sky was driving, and had to pull over to stare. That one was remarkable.

Every clear night over the past 2 weeks I've had my telescope and gear out looking for that thing and have had no success. Like you, there's a ton of light pollution around here.

I think I captured it when I hooked up the DSLR to the telescope with a 5 second exposure but it's little more than a smudge of light. The astrophotography folks have pulled some amazing images but they know what they're doing.

I've tried four times in a week and failed. And I live in a dark skies area. Stupid moon means I have to get up early.

I had a teacher who looked like a smudge.
I can't remember how he died...

It was more of a globule than a smudge.
