F*CK this. I have a kid in college who is on our account. Looks like I will have to finish up a couple shows and then cancel.

Gee, wherever will I find content to stream after this is implemented?...

Their tech support is going to get overwhelmed with legit users who can't get access due to the Netflix crime of not using their service on their home WiFi.

Also the "must sign in once a month" thing is a terrible idea.  People binge shows these days.  If I have to go through a hassle anyway when I want to binge something else next month, it's just encouraging people to do is cancel immediately after each latest binge.

I don't share my account, but I do watch stuff while traveling... it's interesting to login to Netflix when I'm in a different country because their shows are usually different. Sounds like I'll still be able to do it... but only if I limit my vacations to a week or less

As a dual state resident, I'm not amused.  I'm back and forth between my home states sometimes thrice in a month.  I guarantee if they start enforcing it that I will have problems, and I'm not going to fight it, I'm just going to cancel.

2023-02-01 8:58:31 AM
$7 a month is too expensive?

How do you expect the people who make these TV shows and movies to get paid for their work?

/ well, $10 a month for TotalFark IS more entertaining than Netflix at this point

My parents split their time between three states and spend a couple of weeks per year on the road. This will absolutely inconvenience them.

"To ensure that your devices are associated with your primary location, Netflix is now asking users to connect to the Wi-Fi at your primary location, open the Netflix app or website, and watch something at least once every 31 days."

If I get kicked out of my Netflix account because I haven't watched anything in a month, I will unsubscribe, and make sure they know the reason why.

Ironically, people subscribing but not watching is actually the most profitable kind customer they can have, and yet it sounds like they want to drive them away.

Same. We don't even use it often and probably never have more than one stream open (heyooo). Seems like there might be easier ways for them to accomplish their goals without such a drastic shift.

Every other streaming service will be watching how this turns out closely. If it isn't a total failure the other services will incorporate it as soon as humanly possible.

There are definitely easier ways, but you have to remember most corporate executives are idiots who failed their way upwards.

Meh...the first time Netflix blocks me, I'll cancel and pirate everything I used to get from Netflix.

I stopped pirating, not for ethical concerns, but because paying was easier.

If I have to remember rules or remember to login or not have access to content when I'm most likelyto want it (when I'm traveling...in an airport or bus for hours, when I'm at the in-laws, etc) or if my work VPN, work cellphone, personal cell phone, home internet and personal VPN don't ask work seamlessly, the whole thing just becomes a chore that I'm not willing to do.

Honestly can't say I care much either way.

So if I'm traveling for work and start watching on the hotel TV does that lock my family out of watching at home?

This really seems like they're looking for ways to shoot themselves in the foot here.

He's in college, he needs it for Netflix and chill.

On the bright side, his new account will be way cheaper than college.

2023-02-01 9:43:49 AM
As our account is currently paid through T-Mobile and we've all moved since that began, and we have more than one primary account holder, I'm not even certain which of us has the home address. Logging into T-Mobile's website only once in awhile these days is an exercise in sheer madness, so I guess we'll just see at some point.

We've had both accounts for many years. But if I had to give up Netflix, well, bye. I can go to someone else's house once or twice a year for Bake Off and Stranger Things. Most of what I watch is on Criterion or Acorn, or YouTube. I do also pay for Hulu/Disney, one family member pays for Amazon, another for HBO Max. This is the way, these days.

I'm impressed by the lack of "StOp FrEElOadiNg!" in this thread.

As if Netflix didn't promote password sharing when it was trying to grow its user base, and this isn't just removing a feature to try and squeeze existing users for more cash.

Eh, I pared down all my previous streaming services to zero late last year. I'm just fine with my radio, internet, books and videogame/movie collection. Thought I would feel some major FOMO but....nothing.

Wow that sucks. A lot of the reason people sign up for streaming is ease of use, you log in and can use it.

I get that they've got way more competition now but, and this might be crazy talk, wouldn't it be better to add features people want to draw them to the service than remove features people use and make the service more difficult to interact with?

2023-02-01 10:09:52 AM
I doubt I watch Netflix once a month, so as dude up thread said already, first time you lock me out I'll be cancelling. Odds are my work phone is in my desk at work anyway, so I couldn't 2FA even if I wanted to.

They are profitable but not profitable ENOUPH, so now they have to try throwing things at the wall to increase revenue THUS SAYETH THE STOCK MARKET

2023-02-01 10:24:41 AM
There's a very, very easy solution to this, Netflix, that of course you are too stupid to figure out. You even tested something close to it, and somehow, it still escapes you.

Create a "family" tier. Members can create their own Netflix accounts, and have it linked to the primary. Charge, say, $3/month extra per account. Each of those accounts gets the same number of per-stream devices as the primary. Far, far fewer people will be driven away, heck, you may even make more money; you get better, more accurate stats and tracking of what people are watching; and most of all, you don't end up creating a tech support nightmare from the complexity you're proposing.

We share my parents' account right now, and I do mean *share* - I pay them about half the amount per renewal. Neither of us use it enough to justify having our own subscription. (We use Disney+, Hulu, and Paramount+ far more often; my folks generally are either watching live TV or physical media.) I would be fine paying a little extra to keep the current setup.  I am not going to pay for a full subscription (again, all of the other services are used much more often), and my parents are both retired, and therefore have been in cost-cutting mode for a while, so Netflix would be the next thing to go.

Netflix really does think that this will end up gaining them far more extra than they lose, and the chances of that seem really, really slim.

Netflix already has a somewhat effective means to slow password share. There's a limit on how many screens can be on. I gave my PW to my sister. She has kids. I can't share it with anyone else or too many people will get the message about too many screens on.

That's kind of been the argument against this from the beginning.  If you have a plan that let's you watch on 2 devices at once, it shouldn't matter where those devices are.

They've been talking about it for a long time, and rolling it in other select countries, afaik.

These changes won't hit the US until March and we will probably have a few more identical ish submissions before then, and also at least one (probably more) after it goes live.

Increase staff and decrease revenue! Brilliant I say! Absolutely bloody brilliant!

2023-02-01 11:43:49 AM
They're suffering from the same fallacy that anti-piracy advocates use: If we prevent X from happening, that will turn into revenue! People who share passwords won't subscribe if you cut them off. They'll just move on to something else.

If my iPad is going to get banned because I used the service while sitting at the doctor's office, or from a hotel, I'll just cancel the service. The whole point of having a device that can stream shows is so you can take it with you wherever you go. Don't punish legitimate users for trying to use the product they're paying for. It will backfire. There are so many streaming services I can't pay for them all. I'll just adjust which ones I subscribe to.

2023-02-01 11:45:42 AM
Wait... I just realized something.

Signing into home Wi-Fi at least once every 31 days on your devices will make them "trusted devices," which Netflix will remember and leave unblocked.

How in the world are they going to determine what your "Home Wi-Fi" is?

Netflix uses information such as IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a device signed into your account is connected at your primary location.

This makes no sense. At all. IPs can change easily. "Device ID" will be different depending on what you're using. The only possible way this could work is if they're planning on transmitting your Wi-Fi SSID and information when you login.

2023-02-01 12:00:56 PM
My household consists of one person, but I have at least three devices, two of which I use when I travel. Do I have to log in once per month on three devices? Or go through a process to enter a 7-day code? Or I'm locked out? OR I AM LOCKED OUT? OR I AM LOCKED OUT?

And this will happen when I travel?

2023-02-01 12:08:35 PM
uhhh
i do believe if you were basically the only game in town and more or less had nearly 100% of the market.
And then after a compedtive rho bust market final does come into it's own, and you maybe manage to hold onto about 20-30% of the market.

And anyone that imagine you are goring under from all that is clealtly a panicky idiot that don't have enough brain cells to store what happened last week let alone what's been going on for the last 15 years.

2023-02-01 12:32:18 PM
Meh, people are going to piss and moan about this like they pissed and moaned the last times Netflix made major changes to how they worked. Remember the uproar when they split the DVD rental and streaming into two services? Or when they raised prices 5 bucks a month? People got over that just like they'll get over this.

Everyone knows accounts were never meant to be shared outside of a single household and they've been taking advantage of a flaw in the system. Just be thankful you got away with it this long.
