After reading the article, the wording changes go from:
"Annoyed but honest game-making" to "Developers have been kidnapped in the Middle East by ISIS robots, who used ChatGPT to write the script"

I don't think it's an improvement.

The original conversation in this secret room talked about troubles during development, with lines like, "You might say we're experiencing a troubled development," and, "You might also say somebody kept requesting new features and my original vision no longer exists."

But now, as reported by Eurogamer, the room now contains different dialogue in which characters have changed their tune, saying, "Not only are we ahead of schedule on development, we are also setting records in employee happiness... Our staff are all well-rested, well-fed, and their self-esteem is skyrocketing. I can assure you, things are very much under control here! I promise."

My guess is that the environment did suck, so they made the room but players found it and could still get in even after the patch, so the company saved face by having those messages changed to positive stuff, even though the environment still sucks.

It would be bizarre if a $15 game were undergoing the same types of issues as much larger games. I thought the whole point of indie games was to make them to your specs on your own schedule and go broke doing it.

Wikipedia says the first game was made by two people. Who was requesting new features? The other guy?

Is it just a joke? Would someone really set aside time to create this bitter scenario and "hide" it in the game if they were overwhelmed with scope creep and bugs? Because I would and I don't know if other people are weird like me

I think the changes are actually part of the joke.

... so what was the full set of lines before and now?

... and yeah, probably the new changes are part of the 'joke'

I don't know if the studio grew between the games or by how much if it did. Golf Story was a well received and surprisingly successful indie release. Sports Story is much more ambitious than the first game, with several sports included instead of just the one. It was also delayed for quite a while, which suggests that the developers took on more than they could handle in making it.

If anything making a game with a very small team requires more work and more crunch on the part of each individual developer.  The upside is that you reap more of the rewards if it is a success.  Making a game is really hard, indie or otherwise.
