Oh man, I thought this was going to be about Dick Ward being the second choice.

That would have been unfortunate.

Robin Williams? I don't know if that would fit given he is in comedy.

That's what they said about Jim Carrey in Schindler's List.

Nicholson and Duval had the chemistry of a couple in a strained relationship down cold, and that was apparent even in the early scenes of The Shining. Williams and Duval played Popeye and Olive Oyl in a Popeye movie that was so constipated no amount of spinach could have saved it, IMHO. Mind you, all involved here are very talented people, but sometimes a film comes down to chemistry, and I don't think Kubrick would have ever called for "action" on a set with Williams and Duval starring as a couple.

He was amazing as the creepy stalker in "One Hour Photo", a similar role but requiring much more restraint. So, imagine his "One Hour Photo" role but wayyyy over-the-top, the way Kubrick would have wanted and the way Robin tended to get when unrestrained.

That might have been the scariest movie ever... or it might have turned into something so over-indulgent it would put "Mommie Dearest" to shame.

/ now if you'll excuse me, I need to go watch "Vampire's Kiss" for the fifth time.

I like how the article says it wasn't Robin Williams.

Now here's a scary movie idea: An evil movie mogul kidnaps the director of "M*A*S*H" and says, "You will be subjected to extreme torture until you agree to make 'Popeye'!" The title: "WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?"

/ also, Chris Diamantopoulos would play all the parts

This is normally where I'd make some snark about RTFA, but honestly I can't fault you for that one smitty.

Anyway, no, if you can skim through the "article" and are lucky enough to spot a proper name while you're still alive, you'd see that the backup choice is Kris Kristofferson, and that Robin was not really considered.

Came here to mention this. "One Hour Photo" is one of the creepiest films I've ever seen, and Williams is brilliant in it.

Ironically, the 2019 sequel to the film Doctor Sleep, which is also based on King's 2013 follow-up novel of the same name, was better received by King, as it catered more to the story's original themes.

How is that ironic? That's not irony. It's not ironic Stephen King liked one adaptation and not another. Gaw, a terrible article with a terrible last sentence.

I'm not sure audiences in 1980 would have accepted dark, angry scary Robin Williams.  I think he had to build his appeal before going down that road.

My prominent memory of this movie is when Robin Williams is daydreaming and blood comes out of his eyes, my 2 year walked into the room and up to the TV while during that scene and turned to me with a horrified look on his face and cried and cried and cried.

I'll never forget his look of horror. I was so sorry he saw that.

Good movie though

I think Kristofferson would have been perfect.

addendum:

I think he would have made a terrific Jack Torrance and certainly one more faithful to the book - unlike Steven Weber (who seems too nice) he would have been convincing as the "monster" Jack and unlike Jack Nicholson (who seems like he would happily chop his family to bits from the first scene), he would have been able to convey the loving father and husband)
